I have been scratching my head since the kudos started flying about the new mixer function.

Did we not have discreet control of the level on individual instruments before from the main screen? Did the mixer add something more that I don't know about? I am in a space financially where I REALLY need to justify $100 for the upgrade and if the mixer was the primary selling point, I can wait. We HAD a "mixer" of sorts before. Did the mixer button/screen do more than make it more convenient to adjust instrument levels? I was happy clicking the right mouse button....

Eddie

Some things are quicker to do like soloing or muting tracks but otherwise it's all the same - just a different method of accessing the same items.

With some additions it could be really useful but then those functions are already present in Realband where a full mixer exists with the option of insert effects et.al..

Honestly I wanted a mixer but was underwhelmed

in the mixer you get faders instead of spin buttons, for tone panning and reverb, using the combo button you can increment or decrement all instruments (only all instruments) and you can resize the window if your eyes are not great - that's it really, oh and mute and solo.
I did a post in the wishlist about this. There is lots more that could be done, inserts, master channels, signal activity readings, record buttons and lots more

If you dont want the new real tracks (which are very good) I suggest wait

if you have the 2011 ultra pak and wait to christmas time 2011 (going on this mid year upgrade and previous years prices) your 2012 ultrapk will cost around $149 and will include all the present realtracks + new ones that are released then + biab program update however those who upgraded just now to 2011.5 will probably pay just $99 to upgrade to 2012 ultrapak.

So in effect if you want the benefit of the mid year upgrade 2011.5 biab program + 5 mths play time with the new realtracks it will cost you overall around $50 provided of course you DO upgrade to 2012 ultrapak. Thats $50 overall for 5 mths play with all the new mid year stuff.

This is my personal interpetation of PG's past prices and of course they could change their pricing policy.

Well, since having the employment carpet pulled out from under me, I am literally counting change to stay alive as I apply for help from everywhere during the job hunt. Not going anywhere to not use gas (I DO go to the park twice a day so Scruff can have her half mile walks. And as a benefit, I walk with her. SHE didn't lose her job. I did.), buying food on a state supplied food assistance card, looking for a gig here and there, advertising my computer repair business, selling off stuff that I should have gotten rid of years ago, dumping a few guitars... it's touch and go here and I can only hope one of these jobs I have been presented to comes in. I am reaching desperate, near hysterical conditions here, but I have faith it will work out.

So any upgrade is not in the cards for me right now, and not likely by Christmas either as I will be behind for 6-7 months here. I would love to do it right now but living on credit cards, I can't spare the expense.

I do appreciate the info though.

Well for me I use RB live as opposed to BIAB. The JukeBox was a little limited so I made a whole bunch of requests for changes and they all came true. The mixer in BIAB is nice but as you said not a real necessity. The RTs on the other hand are really great. Also the "same but different" feature in BIAB is also worth the upgrade to me.
I know being out of work and on the edge is not fun so before I take the oppertunity to bust your chops I'll tell you that's what I'm doing. Just a little laugh at your expense.
If it was me and I was in your situation I'd throw together a little 3 or 4 piece band. Here's a partial set list that is guaranteed to please the crowd & get you work:
Brown Eyed Girl
Cocaine
Moondance
Mustang Sally
All Right Now
Stairway to Heaven
Free Bird
Sweet Home Alabama
Can't Get Enough
Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Runnin' Down A Dream
Sunshine of Your Love
Smoke On The Water
Louie Louie
Johnny B Goode
Takin' Care of Business
You Really Got Me
Satisfaction
Can't Explain
Substitute
Once Bitten Twice Shy

Consider my chops to be busted....

My list for the next project looks like this right now:

Midnight Confessions
Temptation Eyes
Two Divided By Love
A Girl Like You
Any Dance'll Do
It's A Beautiful Morning
Lonely Too Long
Vehicle
God Bless The Child (a la BS&T)
I Can't Quit Her
Go Down Gamblin'
You Got Me Hummin'
Pick Up The Pieces
Cut The Cake
If I Ever Lose This Heaven

and on it goes. "White Soul" horn band. Some classic Motown to go with it, but Isley Brothers, Brothers Johnson kind of Motown, limited Temps and Tops, but you get the idea. GOT to do some AWB.... I gotta have live horns in my band. I'm a funky white boy from way back. Don't want to turn cliche in the other direction. Got the horn section in line and rehearsing, which is a year long thing since we already play together.

7 music pieces and a singer, IF I can get the singer to give me a 100% commitment. Drums, bass, guitar, keys, trumpet, tenor and me on alto, bari and 2nd keys. Singer is about 80% right now. If not we could all sing but the guy I want can handle this and take the worry off us. 8 piece band, we won't make a dime, but we'll make a lot of good music. And music is about music.

Wonder what that singer guy drinks? LOL!!!

They are in there. Keep Playing That Rock and Roll, Cool Fool, his version of Tobacco Road with the INSANE sax solo.... that White Trash album was classic. I still play it a lot. Great lineup, great performances. The section from The Apollo Theater in Harlem was kind of the idea of this band. Funky White Boys...... which was one of the working titles. Ended up calling it Soular Power. SOULar for soul music, POWER for Tower of Power. The other thought was Soular NRG, but I didn't want it to turn in to "That Thing You Do" with The Oneders being pronounced "O-Needers...".

I'll make you a deal. If you ever see my play Achy Breaky Heart, you come up to the stage. I will give you my address and my keys. You can go to my house, unlock the closet where the gun is, unlock the strong box that the gun is in, load it with one round of the full metal jacket ammo I have, bring it to wherever it is I am playing Achy Breaky Heart, and when I open my mouth to sing, insert the 5 inch barrel of that that .40 caliber weapon, and pull the trigger.

THAT is how much I hate that &^@%$*& song.

And I will sign any kind of waiver I need to sign to show that you had my permission to waste me.....

HOW did that stupid song sell? HOW????

Because it's a line dance Eddie and the women love it. Your taste in music is exactly in line with mine. I'm really a classic R & B B3 player but over the years I've learned to play anything including country line dance stuff. Pink Cadillac and Boot Scootin Boogie are the other two must have line dance tunes.
I was in mostly the same type of horn band you're describing for 5 years in the late 80's. The problem is nobody around here, LA area, pays for a band like that any more. Coincidentally I happen to be doing a horn band gig this coming Friday. Private party. It's what the leader calls his small big band. He also has a full 22 piece big band but not too many gigs for that any more either. This one is ten piece instrumentation with a male vocalist. Killer rhythm section, the bass, guitar and drums are all Hollywood studio cats and the charts are what you're describing including several Chicago tunes including 25 or 6 to 4 and of course What is Hip. That's probably my favoring funk tune of all, love that organ solo. But this is only the second gig that band has had all year. Otherwise it's either my regular once a month restaurant jazz gig and purely commercial stuff that you hate. We just did a CCR medley yesterday in the Indian Casino gig I do every few weeks on a Sunday including <gag> Proud Mary. Not Tina's version, CCR's version. It is what it is and we did it because of a request.
If you can find enough work with your 8 piece then I will be insanely jealous my friend.

Now, curious Eddie has questions. You live in a place where every girl waiting tables and every guy working at the Jiffy Mart is a musician, singer or actor. The horn band you mentioned is the one that drives this question. How many bands like that are playing around LA? I spent 6 months in LA and it drove me too crazy so I left. The girl at the Carl's Junior was a singer. The girl at the 7-11 was an actress. The kid that changed my oil said he had to be careful with his hands because he was a keyboard player. Everybody out there is some kind of performer wannabe. Here in Cleveland, the horn band I want to do will do the private party and wedding circuit (if it even happens).

Let me take a stab at the CCR medley. Proud Mary, Green River, Suzy Q and Born on the Bayou. And then a loop back to Proud Mary to finish it.

I guessed that because I did that very thing. And bit a hole in my lip doing it.

Cleveland has a lot of "on the fly" bands, and what I mean by that is they book a gig in a dive bar just to play so their friends can come out and tell them how great they are, and on Friday they are still calling around looking for a drummer or a bass player. Now how tight could they possibly be?

My Motown band in that late 70s rehearsed 4 days a week, 6 hours per session, for 14 weeks before we came out of the basement. (And kicked Cleveland's ass....) We were good right from the hit. Did a Thanksgiving Eve jam where bands get 2 songs each (What's Goin' On and Cut The Cake) and walked out of there with 7 contracts.

But I hear the gist of your message clearly. It has changed. Clubs are cheap, bands are scabbing each other just to play. I hate where it is now.

It's worse than that Eddie. I've written about it before. That girl singer at Carls would probably knock your dick in the dirt, she's so good. Not only is everybody a player or singer or more likely multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, they're graduates from top music schools. Monster players every one of them. Nobody rehearses out here because everybody knows those songs, not just knows them, they studied them from the guys who wrote them in the first place. When those guys from all the classic 70's bands aren't touring what are they doing? They're guest instructors at the best music schools. That big band I mentioned? The leader and several of the players are graduates from Princeton. They flew out there two years ago for a gig doing all Chicago stuff. They didn't take me. Why? Because Chicago's original arranger, Jaime somebody or other also is a Princeton grad and was there so of course he played the gig. Everybody around here has connections like that. One drummer I work with knows David Garibaldi quite well and has some of his drums. He's a killer drummer but what's his day job? He designs and makes custom golf clubs. Like me he may do a music gig a couple of times a month for $50-150. I'm getting a buck and a half this Friday and the jazz gig at the restaurant is a whopping $50 and a good dinner but it's only 3 miles from me and it's fun.
I'm a good experienced player but I don't have those credentials or connections and if you don't have those you don't work much. Period. But even if you do I wonder how much the guys really make. I know a bass player who was out with Barry Manilow for years and made a ton of money but it's over now. He's yet another awesome player. He jokes he was in the band that cried themselves to sleep every night. His wife will book him for any gig $50 or over that's within reasonable driving distance.

Oh yeah, that CCR medly? You nailed it buddy that's exactly what it was.

First, I just want to say good luck with your job hunting Eddie.

Its funny that list by Silvertones of 'done to death' standards, fits the UK too. I am just a pub gigger but have played most of those here in the UK, more than once.

All the numbers from the film, The Commitments, Deep Purples 'Smoke on the water', 'Midnight hour', most of James Browns repertoire can be added. 'Superstition'

Funny though I love them all, with the possible exception of Feelings..

That list he got from another post of mine and it was a GREAT bit of humor that he did so! Man, that list of songs... every band does them. You don't even need to know who is in the band because you are going to hear 80% of the same stuff no matter who the robots playing it are.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
