I am going to guess his guitar was a custom made Martin.

You will rarely see Doc playing anything besides a Gallagher.

danny, it's not a martin, but good guess. it's a smaller guitar maker that, quite frankly, i'd never heard of before. lets let other picker have a shot before i identify it. btw, if you follow the links to randy scruggs he develops into a phenomenal flat picker.

IN 1968, Doc Watson was picking under a tree at a music festival with Merle Watson. J.W. Gallagher and son, Don walked over and offered for Doc to play the guitar that was in the case they were carrying. Doc did, liked the sound and when he went to hand it back, they struck a deal. “Keep it, for as long as you play it.”

I met Don Gallagher many years ago at a festival when he stopped to listen to a friend and me picking. He’s a heckuva nice guy and talented luthier.
.................................

I’ve seen Doc Watson, Tony Rice and Norman Blake play together several times at the Merle Watson Memorial Festival.

I couldn’t find a video clip, but here’s a couple of cuts off an album with all 3 of them playing.

bob, the b&w still of tony looks like he's holding an ovation guitar. i've only heard him play a martin, maybe a d-35. incidentally, i was able to audibly recognize each picker as i'm sure you could. i still prefer tony's version of "church street blues" over norman's, the composer.

tony's version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JFgC3Ub10E

bob, what's it going to take to get you pickin' for us?

A little known fact about Tony Rice is that he used a Custom Ovation Adamas on almost all of his “Jazzgrass” albums. I think the reason he didn’t play it in public was that so many hard core bluegrassers frown upon them. I know this from personal experience from using an Ovation Custom Legend in flatpicking contests.

The first time I met Steve Kaufman, I was carrying the Ovation and he looked at it and said “What are you gonna do with that thing? Start playing Peter, Paul and Mary?”. First impressions count! LOL. I decided right there that he was an asshole. My opinion of him has never changed! But I still highly recommend his lessons.

Don’t know Don. For now, I’ve “layed down my old guitar”. I just don’t have the heart to put into it. After reaching a pretty advanced level of playing, and then letting those chops go to hell because of not playing, it frustrates me when I pick it up. Add to that wrist problems with the right hand …………..

Here’s the story:

Quote:

Tony Rice's guitar is almost as famous as its owner. The instrument was formerly owned by Clarence White, and was the first D-28 Rice saw. Characterized by an oversized soundhole, an extended but shorter fingerboard with no inlays, and no "CF Martin" script on the peghead, the instrument is immediately recognizable. As with any legend, rumors and urban myths about the instrument abound. At MerleFest '97, I was lucky enough to chat with Roland White about the guitar and his recollections mesh very well with Rice's.

The whole article:

http://www.flatpick.com/Pages/Featured_Artist/Tony2.html

What’s not included in the article, (I don’t think, I just glanced over it), is that the guitar is actually a “Franken-guitar”, in that it’s actually parts of 3 busted guitars. I read an article in Frets magazine where a luthier who’d worked on it made that assertion.
.................
Edit: Make that 4 guitars. Back and sides from one guitar, top from another, neck from another, fretboard from a Guild. I don't know this to be true, but it's what I recollect.

Must be some kind of triva. Doc Watson eh? Was he ever on the Don Messer show?

Doc Watson sounds like he could have been a headliner with Gordon Lightfoot (In the us of eh,here we use centimeters.

At any rate might we get some realtracks from either of them, or is Doc back on Gunsmoke
.)

To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records, in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero. To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for being more than a fine musician and entertainer.

Doc Watson received these accolades not just for his talent, but for the honor, integrity,
humility, grace, and dignity which he has displayed throughout his long and distinguished
career. While there are many, many great guitar players and singers; there is only one Doc
Watson.

While Doc’s playing isn’t as technically proficient as Clarence White, Tony Rice, Russ Barenberg, etc., he was a major influence on all of them. I’ve been fortunate to have seen him perform 20 or 25 times, often in a small venue. He was born in 1923, and he’s still performing.

john, you wonderful, crazy, cantankerous, canuck. i still enjoy your humo(u)r. if you are serious (mark that on outhouse wall), we have doc styles in biab. i've forgotten the exact names offhand. like you can recognize horn players, we can recognize nuances in guitar pickers. just minor subtleties in styles.

btw, tony's link posted earlier in this thread is a perfect example of well-executed hammer-ons and pull-offs. difficult to beat.

While you don’t have any Real Tracks by Doc, you do have some styles. It should come up if you search Doc Watson.

Doc is actually a fan of Gordon Lightfoot, (Litecentimeter?), and sings some of his songs. So is Tony Rice.

Tony Rice took the influences of Doc Watson and Clarence White and elevated them even further. With Clarence’s use of syncopated licks and flatted thirds and seventh’s, (Clarence White and Bill Monroe), Tony took bluegrass guitar into a realm it had never been before.

After getting hired by David Grisman, Tony went to John Carlini for further schooling into the realm of jazz guitar. The results were amazing. He went on to record some of the finest and most tasteful and difficult acoustic guitar playing to date.

He is often emulated, but never equaled.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
