Hey Pat and others, this new Plug in VSTi says it can use SFs, as well as waves, Aiff and some other things. Might be worth looking into.

are you referring to sampletank 2?

BTW - I don't think the EMU Proteus VX is available any longer directly from EMU. That is a huge download anyway.

I will admit that I do occasionally still use a couple of piano soundfonts; the Warren Trachtman Steinway soundfont that is "far mic'ed" with little panning in the font, and then the Splendid font from Akai, which is close-mic'ed with pretty extreme panning. But that's about it - usually I just use the acoustic piano in Sampletank free.

I used to use sf for drums, but since obtaining BFD-free, and Jamstix, that is no longer necessary.

Electromechanical keyboards: I'm using the physically modeled freeware synths from GSi: http://www.genuinesoundware.com/?a=showproduct&b=37

These are absolutely excellent - you will not find better sounding old-school electric pianos and B3 with sampled soundfonts. Period. They have character and nuance that is brought out by playing, that is not possible with the soundfont architecture. Give one of them a whirl - I recommend starting with Mr. Ray for electric pianos - you'll see what I mean.

The reason that I moved away from soundfonts is specifically because I can get a less 'machine' sound from specialized, instrument/voice specific VSTi like those mentioned above. Trying to squeeze everything out of soundfonts has become a non-starter for me.

I was one of the people here many years ago championing the sfz soundfont VSTi because it removed the physical creative labs on-board memory restriction that used to dominate the scene when that was one of the only games in town. 'm 99% sure I introduced sfz to the PG Music community in about 2004 or 2005 time frame. In fact, some got tired of me railing on about it if I recall correctly.

I use it on perhaps 10% of my tracks now.

I was going to post what Scott just said:

<They have character and nuance that is brought out by playing, that is not possible with the soundfont architecture.>

I don't remember the details now but the big drag on SF's is the lack of control with them. They're not full samples like we're all used to. They are somehow truncated or something to make them less memory intensive because of the restrictions with the ancient Soundblaster cards. I doubt any of the SF's you can find now are newer than 10 years old.

I use SFs for very specific things like an added Kick Drum then convert to audio.

BFD free doesn't seem to be available anymore. Bummer.

I liked that idea.

I have a copy of BFD predecessor around here somewhere, along with authorization to distribute freely. I know where the install file is (on my server) but I need to find the authorization code for the free version they gave me. I'll try to do this soon. I believe it was called DDR-005. Maybe 008 ... but it's a drum sample player with it's own little mixer built in and played well with PT/RB years ago.

You can get it here:

DR-005 Drums

The text file in the zip file is the license code file. This is a double zip, so you'll have to unzip to get the license file, then unzip the new zip file for the setup file.

This is actually the copy I downloaded from RHarv last time he posted it, so I'm just saving Bob the time of looking for it.

Thanks jford. I do have permission from the company to share this, so try without reservation as far as legality. I like it. It's pretty much a drum sampler, or sample player really, with quite a bit of control for free.

Me too, thanks again jford. Maybe that double zip is why I had so much trouble finding the verification code. It was there all along and I just skipped over it.

You can of course create your own sound font!
Vienna from Creative is I suppose fairly well known. However you do need access to a range of instruments and decent players, plus good sound recording gear as well as an audio editor to create seamless loops of each note played.
A long hard way round perhaps but fun if you can cover all the requirements.
Vienna can be downloaded from here=

http://vienna-soundfont-studio.software.informer.com/

You do need to have one of the Creative soundblaster sound cards installed though to use it.

I finally understand how to use the sound fonts. Interesting stuff and fun to play with.

I downloaded and installed the DR-005 drums, but they don't seem to work the same way and there's no help file that I can find.

I put the DR-005 plugin in the effects bin of an audio track...
then I directed the output of a MIDI drum track to that plugin...
(which is how many other plugins work) but nothing happened.

The interface left me thinking that I should load wav samples, but to my knowledge, none came with it.

Any help from an experienced user will be appreciated

Correct, you have to load the drum samples you want. You get to pick your snare, bass drum, etc. Then each channel in the mixer gets assigned to a note, best to use the standard GM MIDI drum note scheme. I'm not home, but I do have some prebuilt kits for it I could dig around for later.

I tried to keep the download small, as many people were on dialup back when that was released. Finding drum samples online is easy enough.

Pat, my reply in another thread triggered a thought for this app. If you open a realdrum wma file, and go to the end, you can often find single hits of each of the drums. Using these you could theoretically construct your own soundfont based on the realdrum recordings, using Vienna. It would be a bit of work, but if you are enjoying this whole soundfont thing...

Or even easier would be to edit each hit and use it as a sample in the DR005. Then you could do what everybody has been asking for for years; have each individual realdrum/cymbal controllable.

Bob, that's an excellent idea. Two years ago I would jumped on it and stayed up all night trying to figure out how to do it. But lately, my brain is not so good at learning new things and overcoming obstacles anymore.

I figured this out about a month ago when I looked down and saw that my shoe was untied, and the first thought that came to mind was... "oh no... what'll I DO?"

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
