Checked forums- I've noticed that when mixing (MIDI channels using the realband mixer) that track volumes never do "return" to peak loudness (127) when pushed up after lowering volume slider, even though the channel says it's a t 127. EXAMPLE: Set up a MIDI song (doesn't matter) Grab a channel in the mixer (or for that matter on the channel strip) lower it and , in my case although the slider can be pushed back up to max, the volume on the VST never returns to max, only about 80%. I can graphicly see this, say I'm using Hypersonic as my VST, I can watch, even though i start out a channel on Hypersonic at max, when i use the realband mixer to adjust the volume down and then back up, Hypersonics volums follows the realband mixer down and back up to about 80% and then does not go any further even though i've maxed out the slider in the realband mixer. This happens on any channel. My thought is that the control #'s are not tracking or matching up correctly, but have no idea why this would be happening. just curious if any else has seen signs of this, as it makes mixing pretty well impossible. Doesn't seem to matter which VST I use.
While I'm here- the "boost" dialog on each channel, when changed, seems to affect EVERY channel that is using the same VST for a sound source. I'm assuming this is supposed to happen,I would think it would boost the individual channel, regardless of connection, to be really an effective tool. EDIT/ADDED Goofed around a bit more and discovered that the MASTER VOLUME in the tool bar seems to have to be at 100% for the individual sliders to return to max. Say I have the MASTER VOLUME (in the toolbar) at 75%. Seems that if the original track volume is above that when the song starts it's O.K. but if you tweak the volume below that of the MASTER, it will not agasin go above the MASTER setting. That does "solve" my issue, but is this a normal function?

Yeah. That Master volume thing is a queer little duck. You'll see that most of us set it at max and leave it there. It has no practical use.The only thing about it is that it's setting is not saved with the song. If you need to lower your volume at a gig you can pull this down and all songs will be lowered proportionally. You could pull the fader down on your mixer as well or turn the volume down on your powered speakers. No real use IMHO

Ok, that explains an issue I've always had using Sampletank with RB. Could never figure out why Sampletank instruments would not follow the volume setting I had in the individual RB track if it were set to max; would always kick over to some lesser number in Sampletank once I hit play. Never considered the Master Volume setting; assumed that it would have no effect on sending the track volume setting. Makes sense now, thanks, although I don't think it should function this way.

I also wish PG would make a change so that Master Volume setting would save with the other song settings. I've made a request for this in the wishlist.

Glad to hear at least I'm not crazy. for shure I'll just leave it maxed and adjust the songs as needed. I agree-just is a strange way to do it.

Robh- Found him in my yard here in FL, nursed him back to health, let him go and still see him time to time. Never ever drink that many Marguaritas!! thanks for the reply, guys!!

If you are refering to the volumn slider in the ALL column then this is very useful in the context of Mixing tracks. I find that when finalising a Mix and my final Compressor (Triple Comp)indicates clipping then I can lower the ALL slider to lower all the tracks below this level and retain the existing dynamics.

Are you using MME or ASIO drivers? Could there be an effect, like "Peak Limit / Dynamics" or something set globally running in the background? That would explain why the volume level is not returning 100%, some compressor / dynamic leveling happening we don't see?

I know if I set my driver to ASIO, and have it set to a "priority" type when listening to anything wave related on my lappy, I think the PG Peak Limit also runs "globally" along with the driver. Not 100%, but there is a difference in db's when set to ASIO.

That's because ASIO bypasses all of the Windows mixer stuff.

Hi LynB- No- I'm talking about the Master Volume slider in the toolbar. It "brick walls" any volume settings on any channel if it's not at max. Hi- Muzic Trax- Silvertones. I'm using ASIO drivers (tascam us800) with no effects applied anywhere in the chain. As explained above-when the Master volume of Realband is set to max, all is fine. I haven't yet had time to play around to see if any other setting combinations might be causing this quirky action to appear, but i would think that it would not be a "built in" feature to act this way. thanks for the input- I'm shure we'll get to the bottom of this sometime, not a show stopper, but a very curious blip.

It's a good thing to notice. It also affects any 'written' files, like merge downs, so that is why you see most long time users suggest leaving that slider (and the All slider) all the way up in day to day use. Especially when recording/mixing/mastering.

Hi Bob,

The ALL Slider and the Master Slider in the Toolbar are linked and have the same effect.

I meant the All slider and the slider in the main output section of mixer (A1 usually). These are different.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
