I have just started using BIB. My interest lies in the odd measures. Can anyone help me to understand how I can get a rhythm like the one our drummer used in the live recording of the following song?

Later She Whether Or Kaeng Live

Back then we did a couple of songs in similar beats and I really want to play around with those types of beats. However, BIB doesn't really do what I want it to do. Anyone who can help? Cheers from Germany

BiaB doesn't do odd times like this very well. It is kinda clumsy .. however, there are some odd time styles available. You have to look through your list and find them. I believe 11/8 and 7/8 realdrums are available. It'll be hit and miss though as far as if they actually work for you.

The reason I say they are clumsy is because they are odd times laid over a 4/4 time signature. So it becomes difficult to program other parts with them. I would suggest trying Realband, setting the time signature to the desired odd time, and then try various realtracks. This will also be hit and miss but offer more possibilities.

I found that by using a 15/8 style (or maybe it was 13/8) and setting the time signature to match in Realband I actually ended up with a 7/8 pattern (because the style was designed to lay over 4/4 and got truncated). It gets complicated.

The software isn't designed (or developed) for odd times yet, so as I said you end up experimenting in uncharted territory.

You can force odd time signatures with the F5 button, but the results depend on your creativity and the style you choose. Some styles will work, others will sound awkward.

First of all, consider each bar in BiaB to be a cell instead of a full bar.

Then say if you want a song in 5/4 time, make the first cell have 3 beats and the second have 2 OR make the first cell have 2 beats and the second 3 depending on which sounds better for the song you are entering. Then it will take two BiaB cells to make one bar of music.

7/4 works with one cell of 3 and another of 4.

More complex time signatures may take more than 2 cells.

I couldn't get your mp3 to play, so I don't know what time signature the song you posted is in so I can't give direct advice on that particular time signature.

Also, I don't know how this works with the Real Tracks, as I use MIDI styles exclusively. Why midi? See http://www.nortonmusic.com/midi_vs_loops.html - and as always YMMV

I had to download the mp3 file to get it to play. Clicking it did not work as expected.
If I recall it felt like 11/8, but I didn't count it out. Once I heard the pattern I knew he was in for some complications.

Thanks for your input. I guess it's always like that when you leave the common paths a little. 11/8 exists in some country music I understand. However, the rhythm our drummer used on that track (and others) ist not like that so the Style "About Time" which sounds promising because it contains odd measures doesn't really help here.

I wonder now whether it's possible to create your own styles. Let's say record the drum loop, put it into a BIB 4/4 measure so that after 11/8 (which for BIB is 4/4) the chord changes fit the music.

Sorry for that - on my computer it works just fine. The measure is 11/8. The feel is 7/8 + 4/8 (one, two, three, four, five, six, se(ven), one, two, three, four). I tried to come up with a combination of measures in BIB: 3/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 - treating the 4ths as 8ths notes. However, then the feel of the drums in BIB doesn't fit.
It might help if I found a way to make BIB think in 8ths rather than 4ths. I am willing to experiment - however, if there are people out there who have tried and found out that there's no way, I am willing to save time and work on other stuff.

I don't think anyone commented on how cool this was. Love the odd time-patterns, and a very cool vibe overall. who are we listening too?? Do Tell!

Thanks. Whether or ... Käng was the band I was playing with 13 years ago. We did a live recording which was later on mastered and published in a very small number of copies (2000 CDs as far as I remember). If you like that kind of music, there's another track (Bathing) of the CD on my homepage: Käng Live
There are also a couple of other songs. I was thinking of publishing the whole CD via the internet, but before that I wil have to talk to my former band members. It's not actually something which is supposed to make history, and yet, the music is the result of a long and sometimes intensive creative process. I still have very fond memories - alas, the one who produced the CD back then doesn't have the tapes anymore. I would give a fortune to be able to work on some of the tracks. I still like the Bass player and the drummer working together. If I had these tracks (drums and bass), I am pretty sure that some tracks could be turned into some pretty nice music. (The guitar sound, the stuff I played on the guitar, the keyboards and the sound and style of the singer need to be worked on, I feel today).

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
