I live a long way from Victoria B.C., here in Ottawa ON. I ordered 2012 on Tues. about noon. It was in my hands by Wed. 10 am. Such super service! I do have one question. This time it came with a cute little Phillips screwdriver. What's It for? .....Hank

Hi Rutabago,

I've read a few instances of the USB hard drives not sitting correctly in their cases. Sometimes this has stopped the drive working and other times it has made for a noisy drive. I suspect the screwdriver is there to open the casing and correct the drive's seating if necessary.

Regards,
Noel

I suspect that someone up at pgmusic in the assembly/shipping left their little screwdriver in your box as it is not typically an included item. Happened to someone last year as well.

I wouldn't worry about it, either, just enjoy your new jeweler's screwdriver.

Maybe *some* of the drive kits they bought do include a screwdriver, don't know.

Just don't want those who didn't get a screwdriver in theirs to think that they are missing out on anything important...

Might never be important I have one or two around and the wife has one in her purse tied to the swiss army knife of 40 years. I got another with my drive this year.

My's wife's swiss army knife provides lots of entertainment like...'anyone have a corkscrew?' or scissors, or a screwdriver/bottleopener.

Ha.

What most of you don't realize is that the hard drive is in fact a miniaturized TARDIS (with a fully functional chameleon circuit), and the screwdriver belongs to a tiny Doctor Who.

As long as we're talking about the hard drives... May I ask, what is the physical size of the drive enclosure that PG Music ships? Nowadays those things range anywhere from the size of an iPod up to a small textbook.

I want a Christmas Screwdriver too for my glasses. HAHA.
Any news on the 146 patch?
149 beta update has certainly improved things, great work.
Thanks Jeff

Hello all,

Noel96 had it - we are including screwdrivers with the hard drive packages now, just in case a hard drive reseat is required (as per our hard drive troubleshooting doc: http://www.pgmusic.com/tutorial_hd-troubleshoot.htm )

Thanks,
Will

it's a touch bigger than an IPhone and I got the small screwdriver too. One of the early HD's from PG did lose connection and I had to open up the drive case and plug it back in. Those little screws are tiny, I dropped one on my carpet and the thing just disappeared, took me a few minutes to find it.

Well, I did not get a little screwdriver. Perhaps that's because in another thread, I mentioned I already had one from PG Music from another update. At least this time the OP didn't call the screwdriver 'goofy'. And yes, one time I had to reattach the hard drive's connector to make it operational after shipping. They are rough on packages in New York.

The audiophile drive (might be the same as regular) is 5 1/4" by 3 1/8" by just under 1/2" thick.

Well, I hope I get one. My 2011 hd had a screw missing and part of the electronics were spilling out. Just pushed them back in. Everything worked well. Still missing the screw though...No puns at this point please..ha ha.

The screwdrivers are provided to us "free of charge" when we buy the hard drive enclosures (cases). If the delivery man has been drop kicking the package, its possible the hard drive connections have become loose - so the screwdriver is "just in case" you need to open the drive to reseat the hard drive.

Hi Mac,
I got one too, with my 2011.5 upgrade usb drive.

I've found it handy for removing the screws from one of my Xmas ornaments that needed a battery replacement.

So I was more than greatful to have it or it would still have a flat battery. haahaa

146 done.

Yup, there's a selling point. Honey I bought a little screwdriver and I can fix your glasses for free!!!

The hard drive is thinner than most guys wallets. About 5 inches by 4 inches. It's black with cool gold letters that say Band in a Box. And it comes in ....a box! How cool is that. I for one, think there should be neat pictures of it, that's cute enough most guys could show the wife and she'd say ok. Ok course on the other end, you could go to some cowboy/biker bar and bring home 3 guys, drink a bunch of beer and jack, smoke cigars, and tell her this is going to be your band, practise twice a week. Then on Sunday tell her just after church (LOL) that you found this band in a box for only X$ would replace those guys. Easy sale or what?

Typically (recent versions) the drives have been a small shirt pocket size drive, 160 gig notebook type drive in a small enclosure. And seem to last quite well. Little more than 3" X 5" and 5/8" thick maybe. Just my guesstimate.

.. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I actually needed to use the screwdriver as my package must have been drop kicked a couple of times and the drive had come off the connector.

The manufacturers should add a small rubber pad to keep the hard drive pushed up on the connector.
