'Holiday' by Matt Finley. ©2003 Kingsmill Music / BMI Used with permission.

I wrote this in 2003 for a show my wife directed. She had elementary school kids dancing and singing to it!

Note: this was recorded well before RealDrums & RealTracks. Some of you may have heard the song on Gary Curran's site, but now we have this great User Showcase forum.

Matt,
I always loved that song, but I never could figure out why you didn't do it with a horn. I'd like to hear it done again with Real Tracks and Real Drums.

Thanks Gary. I usually play it on vibes. Yes, I'll see how it sounds with our newer tools.

Beautiful Matt!

It's such a happy "vibe" - no pun intended.

Hi Matt,

Wow! What a great song. You've certainly got the knack for writing quality music I enjoyed the listen; thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I'm just heading back for the second take.

Best wishes for a peaceful and wonderful Christmas,
Noel

Thank you Josie, Noel and Tommy. Appreciate it!

Tommy, I do play vibes as a double, but this is all MIDI. I recorded the vibes solo on my keyboard at slow speed (!) then edited it and added grace notes as a vibes would do, and changed to a vibes patch. At the time, my goal was to do a realistic solo using only MIDI.

That qualifies for another "Wow!" from me. I didn't pick that up at all.

Well, what prompted me to post it now was the renewed interest in MIDI features as requested by Peter. Thanks again!

What a nice and delicate composition! You did a superb job with MIDI, but I would love hearing that song recorded by real instruments, it's so beautiful!

Matt,
I've finally put my finger on it! Vince Guaraldi! That's what this music reminds me of. His Christmas jazz waltzes, in fact, all his jazz waltzes, appear to play a large influence in this song. Whether they do or not, I don't know, but it sounds like it does.

If you're playing it live, please video it and post it to YouTube!

Gary

Matt,
what sound module or soft synth did you use for this? As MIDI goes, this sounds quite dynamic

Thanks, Pat. It was an Edirol SD-80. I have since replaced it with a Fantom XR, and although there are more patches, the sounds of any given instrument are the same (Roland makes Edirol).

I read a post by Notes Norton that he still uses the Edirol SD-90. The sounds of the 80 and 90 were the same.

Hi, Matt -

I'm just now getting around to listening to this. Very nice, as usual. And it really has a happy Christmas feel to it.

Just gotten around to listening to this one Matt, Very nice very professional and seems to have a Christmas touch too. Was going to ask about the sound card/module but I see an Edirol, not bad at all.
Great Work.
Jeff

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
