Excuse my complete ignorance on this subject, but when writing a song with BIAB all I am getting is the chords and not single notes? Is the melody the part that would have single notes? What is the difference between playing chords and notes? Could I write a song with notes in BIAB or does it just use chords?

You may write your own notes on the Melody track, the Soloist track, or both. These notes will be played along with whatever chords you have entered on the main screen chordsheet. The program generates an accompaniment based on the chords you enter.
If you need to know how to get into the Notation Edit mode to enter notes for the Melody or Soloist, let us know.

Yes, in this case the tone and phrasing changed a lot: this is my piccolo trumpet on a classical church gig!

Most of us use Biab for the backing (bed tracks) and sing or play the lead on the melody/soloist tracks, like Matt mentioned.
You can also use Biab's Harmony feature to spice up the lead notes with some beautiful harmonies here and there to "spice up" your song/arrangements.

Leonard, it would help us to know what it is you would like to do. I'm not sure from the broad questions in that first post.

Sounds like you're a new user and it's tough to know what BIAB does do, can do, and can do easily. Primarily, BIAB says "you tell me the chord progression, the style, and the tempo, and I'll be your back up band playing from different instruments on the Bass, Piano, Drums, Guitar, and strings tracks (parts). Then you can sing or play the melody (or whatever) on your instrument along with me". Very cool. Now you say "But I want you to play the melody too!!." BIAB says "But I don't know the Melody. But I have saved two tracks for you and you may add the melody (or whatever) to that. The two tracks are right next to the others, Melody and Soloist. So just add the melody to the Melody track, chose an instrument for the track, and I'll play the melody along with the band."
So BIAB is ready to do what you want, you just need to add the notes to the Melody track. To do so with midi, you can manually enter the notes in the piano roll view or notation view or record it real time with a midi controller, or even you computer keyboard (I think). If you are recording your melody in audio, you can do that too. See Help to get started with all this. Good luck.

Try clicking the Big M melodist and it will generate a random melody. You can change or enter the notes by clicking the picture of the quarter note on tool bar. When the screen comes up click the pic of whole note with a blue L on the bar in that new screen and that will select staff roll mode. Enter a note ,dragging the blue line up is louder and away is sustain.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
