I notice im able to go into the seqencer and take out all the sound just leaving the chords playing in BIAB .Can those chords be transferd to an external keyboard driving the automatic accomplement part only . just cusious ,Thanks .

Hello Greg,

Band-in-a-Box can send chords to your output MIDI driver using the 'Output Chords' feature (Opt. > Preferences > OutputCh).

This can go to your external keyboard, however, whether the auto-accompaniment can be driven by this MIDI depends on the keyboard itself. For example, a Yamaha PSR-e403 has accompaniment and arpeggio features, but only work by playing the keys.

Sorry, I do not know. I only know about that particular Yamaha because I had one and tried to do what you are trying to do.

Hi Greg,

What model and brand of keyboard do you have?
I myself have a Yamaha Tyros1, and am able to have BIAB send the chords to it and trigger the auto accompaniment feature.
I was also able to do that with a Yamaha PSR 500 years ago.
So it is possible to do this, but really depends on your keyboard.

Hi Tim,
I use to own the Yamaha psrs 900 but sold that and then bought BIAB .If I would have known BIAB can trigger the accomplement styles on the keyboard I would have kepted my Keyboard but to answer your question as of now I do not own a keyboard.I'm just wondering which Models would work with BIAB? I know the arrangers can do alot but I don't think I want to go back and buy one of those mainly becuase the cost in volved so I'm wondering what is the least exspensive Yamaha keyboard I could buy that would accomplish this ? Your advice would glady be appriciate. Thank you .

P/S It would be nice to see a Video Tutorial on this Subject.

I do know that The Tyros models and the Yamaha psrs 900 can do what you want.
As for less expensive keyboards I only have experience with the PSR 500 and that worked some what.
I could send chords from my sequencer program via midi to it and trigger the auto feature, but as I recall there was a timing issue.
For some reason the PSR 500 wouldn't receive the clock data sent by my sequencer.
program.
I had to come up with a work around for that.

I'd get on some Yamaha groups and ask people who are doing what you want with less expensive keyboards.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hello Again Tim I have found a Guy who got this to work .They only thing is he is using a Tyros Keyboard which I can not aford to buy so maybe there are cheaper Yamaha keyboard that can get the Job Done .Here is his directions he sent to me and he is going to make a Video on it in a few days to share .

His Email to me ---> Hi Greg,

I spent a bit of time, and finally got it. The results were beyond my expectations. It works fantasticly.

1) You have to mute all of the voices on the BIAB, except 'soloist.
2) You have to uncheck "Use VST/DXi Synth"

On the Tyros, I had to ---
1) Set midi to Clock Ext.
2) Turn midi input to Chord Detect,
3 Check all channels on USB to receive input from BIAB

At That point it was working 'somewhat' but sounded horrible.so after hunting for an hour or two, I found that I had to check Vocalist box on the midi output section of Preferences on the BIAB
Then the sounds were beautful clearly indicating that the BIAB chords were controlling the syles and the song. I could even change styles live from the the Tyros, from the 1 to 4 level our change genre from R and B to Latin while the BIAB song is playing. I was plesently surprised at how good it sounded.

I will try to make a tutorial in the next few days for youtube. It is too difficultto describe in words alone. It's not too much more different then the tutorial I made a year ago using the Yanaha guitar.
The difference is checking off and muting the right things on BIAB. I hope the tutorial demonstrates the nice sounds I was getting live from the Tyros.
If you have no intention of buying a tyros, I am not sure of how much good my information will serve you, But I suspect there are lower costing keyboards from Yamaha that should work. All you have to do is make sure the keyboard has "chord Detect" and External Clock Features.

Hi Myzone,
I have a psr1500& it works with BIAB, using chord detect setting/external clock.

i had a look thru some of the midi specs on the cheaper current psr's , couldn't find the relavent function,
so guessing they probably won't work.

They don't appear to have good midi specs in regards to Receive function.

Below link to Yammie Manuals
Page 209 for PSRS710 manual states it has the chord detect function like me psr1500.

I'm guessing that the higher tomid end keyboards, like tyros, psrs910,710,900,700,3000,1500 have trhe better midi specs.

Download the manuals for the keyboard that yo might be considering & just make sure it can sync to external clock & that part of it's receive functions, it has Chord detect.

I haven't used my setup in a while as I mainly have it midied to my Korg PA3x, but I think my setup might have been easier than above. I think I just disable the Receive for the midi channels that Corresponded to
BIAB songs , so that all that was sent was the chord channel> I'd have to double check that though.

Hi Greg,
the fact that it must be able to receive chord data from a keyboard etc looks promising, but you'd still want to check manual. I had one a a while back, I'll see if I still have it saved.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
