We use to record using a Zoom H1 handy recorder, to evaluate our progress (plus or minus). As the H1 is rather cheap I speculated if it would be possible to use 4 or 5 of these and import the recordings into RealBand as separate tracks. Maybe you could place a H1 near the bass cabinet, and one near the guitar cabinet, one near the drums, give a loud sound, start all the H1's record your song
--later import the tracks from the MicroSD's into RB, synchronise the tracks using the loud sound as a marker. Now you're able to balance the levels without using expensive multitrack recorders and separate microphones. The H1's incorporate it all :-)

This shouldn't be a problem - but I would hit a slap-stick sound at the beginning of every song. With that said, you probably could get by cheaper with a multi-track recorder or an existing laptop with a multi-channel interface, and with certainly less hassle.

Here in the US, the Zoom H1 runs around $100.

The Zoom R24, a 24 channel multi-track recorder, audio interface, DAW control surface, etc. is only $500. This does assume that you have microphones - otherwise you do add those expenses in as well.

So, buy the R16 instead, a 16 channel recorder, and use the $100 to buy some additional dynamic mics at $40-50 each. Certainly if you are in a band, you already have a few mics, correct?

I would much rather attack recording a band practice with a multitrack recorder than with attempting to synchronize files from 5 separate H1 files.

Just something to think about.

I own the R16 and is a wonderful piece of equipment, it can record 8 tracks at once and can run on batteries so it is totally portable. It comes with two condensor mic's built in but I normally use external mic's. What is nice is it can be used as a mixer, recorder or a controller using Mackie control language. I would definately use this over the H2.

Sorry for my late reply! It seems like this could be something for me. Are the 8 tracks

impportable to RB as separate tracks?

Yes you can import & export the tracks on the R16. They are stored on a SD memory card which you can access either by a usb cable to the R16 or removing the SD memory card and inserting it in a computer memory card reader. I go the other way as well using RealTracks and putting them on the R16 memory card and take it to another location to record since it is portable. They do have to be renamed to a certain format when doing this though as the R16 is picky about the syntax of the file name. Download the user manual and see if this might be for you.

I'd get an 8 input card for a couple hundred bucks and pull from the mixer. But that's just me. So much more versatile; record practice, record performances.. record bands.

rharv,

I'm not sure about which would be more versatile here:

1. No talk of a mixer existed in the original post. In fact, it sounds like they don't have a mixer - these are rehearsals where each player is bringing amps and what not.

2. No talk of a laptop or desktop being brought to the rehearsal.

3. The Zoom R16/R24 ARE multi-input audio interfaces as well as standalone recorders, so they have your suggestion built in - plus all the benefits of being a standalone recorder as well.

4. It's a Mackie-type control surface as well

So, in terms of the versatility - I think the Zoom R16 wins hands down over an 8 input sound card.

Stratocaster - I hope you are following this discussion still. The Zoom R16 or R24 function as standalone recorders for which you can import from them into DAW software, OR they also function as proper audio interfaces to record directly into a laptop or desktop based DAW.

That's true, but I figgered if the band was there, ready to rehearse, there would be a mixer available. Guess I pictured it how it would happen here..

I have A Zoom H2 and that has the option of 4 channel surround .You could easily set up practice so 4 players would have a track. you will have bleed from others ,but you will the other way also. this is just another option to try .

I'm still following Scott! Though with some intervals :-)

The R16 sounds as something I could use. I guess I then can pack up my M-audio 410, and use the R16 as my soundcard instead, isn't that so?

@stratocaster - I believe that is true based on these statements about the Zoom R16 from the Zoom site:

USB power for audio interface and control surface operation

High-definition 24-bit/96kHz recording capability using digital audio software

It's a digital multi-track recorder, an audio interface and a control surface, providing you with all the tools necessary to create studio-quality recordings anywhere.

It's an Interface.

The R16 is more than a multi-track recorder. It's also a powerful workstation when using USB power for studio operation. Connect the R16 to your laptop or desktop computer via USB, launch your favorite DAW or use the included Cubase LE 5, and start laying down your production tracks. With the 8 balanced, combination XLR-1/4-inch inputs 2 outputs (8 x 2), you can record high-definition, 24-bit/96kHz audio (2 x 2). Use the R16's built-in effects as you lay down tracks on your computer.

As I looked to see about Win7 compatibility (because I'm actually thinking this would be a great box to own for myself for exactly the same reasons), I see one small recommendation that would be a bit of a cause for concern to me:

* Intel Chipset is recommended.

That statement sounds just slightly alarming to me. What if you don't have an intel chipset? What issues does that raise?

That is something worth investigating before purchase, or at least purchase from a local retailer who can guarantee function or accept the product back for a refund. Here in the US, Sweetwater Music has great prices and a great return policy.

Scott I own the R16 but use it as stand alone or on a Intel chipset laptop which works fine. My desktop system is a AMD but has the the Delta 44 PCI which I use the most at home. As far as problems go with chipsets you might want to check out this Zoom Forum . I purchased mine from Sweetwater sometime ago and I will tell you they have exellent tech support that can answer any concerns you might have.

Hi Scott and others!

I finally purchased the R16 and I'm really impressed how much functionality you get for the price. I just tried to install the drivers to get it to work as my PC audio interface. When I connect the USB cable and press USB the display shows sample rate 96KHz and solo (whatever that means) my computer has chosen R16 as my interface and if I start a song from youtube I can "see" the sound (the level indicators work) but have no sound from phone or line jacks, any hints ???

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
