My old Archos G-Mini just bit the dust. Grinding noise from the hard drive. Probably costs more to repair than to replace.

It has given me faithful service for many years now. I frequently hooked it to my PA set and record our live performances for evaluation and improvement. Plus I could use it for other things well like listening to mp3 files.

So I went to Archos, and they no longer make an mp3/wav player/recorder that has an audio input jack, only a mic. Did a google search and a Creative Zen was recommended. Went to Creative and couldn't find one with an audio input jack, so I sent them an e-mail. The comment came back saying they don't currently make one with an input jack.

iPod is out, because I don't want to deal with iTunes - it is such a PITA. The Archos just acted like an external hard drive when hooked to the USB port of my computer.

So the question is: Does anyone know of a company that currently makes a wav/mp3 player/recorder that has an audio input jack?

Thanks,

You could probably replace the hard drive with a standard 2.5" 20 gb one. You can pick those up as external drives pretty cheap. Worth a try.

Bob, I use a SONY PCM-M10 which has both a line in and a mic in, although each are 1/8" mini jacks as well as the line out. It also has a mini-USB connection for direct loading to/from the computer.

It is not inexpensive, but it records and plays .WAV files as well as .MP3, and has the best user menu/display I could find on these portable units. It is still on the market.

By the way, I also used to hate iTunes, but I'm learning to live with it on my iPhone and iPad. Did you know that there are inexpensive programs for the PC that can read files within iTunes, so you can do file management much like you would on any external drive?

Bob:

There are quite a few portable units that record WAV/MP3 to SD flash memeory cards, including the Sony unit Matt mentioned above.

I have the Zoom H2 ( now replaced by the zoom h2n) and that has an 1/8th inch stereo input.

You can go to sweetwater and see all their portable flash memory recorders.

The above links to a Tascam DR40 handheld 4-track. It will playback mp3s and record at the same time. Sounds Ideal for what you want to use it for. I love mine.

XLR and 1/4" Combo Inputs w/ phantom power
records to SD/SDHC cards in either .wav or .MP3 formats

Also, B&H has always treated me well.

I have the Tascam DR-05, which I like a lot. It is a good recorder and a good mp3 player. The only input is a combined "Mic/Ext" jack. 1/8 in. I think the other Tascam units have the same thing. I don't think it is strictly a line input, but I have gotten good results using this jack with line-level signals, I think you will have to try for yourself to see if it works for you.

I got mine at Guitar Center. So go there and see if you can get your hands on one.

Flatfoot's recommendation is on sale at Musician's Friend.

"You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it."

Lloyd,

Than is a more substantial unit than I purchased.
It has a more substantial system too it.
Also later model I believe. It uses AA bats, and think
the bat lifespan is much longer.

In my case was not even shopping, when run across the
PR-10 for 50 bucks, couldn't pass it up.

Good find!

The TASCAM PR-10 @ $49 was just too hard to pass up. It should make decent field recordings for self-evaluation.

I'm hoping it can run on one of those AC-USB adapters - I can't see any reason why not.

Thanks again.

Notes,

I own a GBC punch/binder machine...BIG deal....

Anyway I had downloaded the pdf manual, printed and
bound the 108 pages and started reviewing this evening.

One piece of news that is good for POWER is the USB port
does maintain power to the unit.
I also was happy to find this out.
That also "probably" means you could use AC-USB adapter.

Thought this would interest you.

Edited after 108 page manual review.
If this little unit lives up to its specs
and instruction guide it is "DynoMite"...

I downloaded the manual as well and read that. Hopefully it works like it reads (you never know with manuals).

I have a Korg PadKontrol that is supposed to be able to be powered by the USB port, and it can, as long as you are using the USB as the MIDI output. If using the 5 pin DIN MIDI port, I have to use the wall wart - no big deal.

If the PR10 won't do that, I'll just get some rechargeable AA cells. I hate throwing cells and batteries into the landfill.

I'm happy about the memory going to flash memory instead of a hard drive. Hard drives on portable equipment is a failure waiting to eventually happen.

It should arrive on Wednesday.

Part of the reason I got the unit was to "easy record" from my PSR-3000.
It sits about 4 ft from my main desktop. The alesis is also very close,
so the setups should work well. Wally on the Bats, quality and price.

The mini-usb modes are "PC to files" or "Record/charge" mode. This will
work out well for me.

They bumped my delivery a bit...Thursday, back in
North California "fire prone" hills. We are terrified for next couple of months.
Overall dry winter, 80% of our oaks look dead, last couple of weeks.

In Canuckistan we are socialists, so we save our batteries and they go to on of many places. We have about 2000 in a box in the basement, I guess it's time for another run. Now that the kids are gone there won't be enough to worry about.

Staples takes them and all electronics for recycle. I bet the make money off the effort also.

I also take batteries and light bulbs for recycling. But I'd rather not use them at all. The energy and resources used to recycle them are still something I'd rather avoid.

Rechargeable batteries and AC adapters are much kinder to the earth.

And it's not about saving the earth, the earth will be here when the human race is long gone, its about saving our own @$$e$.

Good guess -- either that or coming out with something new and getting rid of the old.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
