Hello!

I have not posted here in a long time. I picked up BIAB 2013 and am having a lot of fun with it... If there is anyone out there that knows how to chord a song just by listening to it I need some help in this area. I only play by ear and I do not know how to break down a chord progression. I am willing to pay someone to do this if the price is within reason. I have 8 songs and will probably have to do them one at a time due to my income. I will be perfectly clear about something else. I do know that BIAB has an auto chord wizard that I have tried to use. The chord wizard does not seem to get it right that is why I would like to find somebody to break down the chord structure for me; I know that there are a lot of very experienced musicians on here. If someone is willing to help me and does not charge a lot; I would appreciate the help thank you very much. You can e-mail me at

whiskers567@yahoo.com

Or you can just post a reply to this message.

Thanks again.

I'll bump you with this query which may help others who might help.

How would you present your songs to someone so they would be able to determine a chordal progression for you?

Good luck on your quest....carry on.

The Audio Chord Wizard is meant to figure out the chords of existing songs. It will not suggest chords for a new song.

To have BiaB suggest chords, try the "Chord Substitution" or "Chord Reharmonist" dialogs. You will have to be able to enter melody as notation.

Also I sent you a PM.

So just provide a link to one of the songs so we can hear it, heck if it is a 12 bar blues I will be able to do it for you. How tricky is the progression? Lets hear it.

Help me help you . . . If I understand correctly the song is posted somewhere? If this is true someone had to write the chord changes to the song, and assuming that is correct whatever software or music score which was used should have the chords and structure in it's file or paper.

Now if the song is just, say someone singing, humming or whistling and a guitar or piano does the musician know the chords they are playing?

Or, is it just a melody that is posted? If this is the case it should not be too hard to work out the chords that would best support that melody.

Just trying to get my mind around exactly what you are trying to do.

If this is not an original song you can google ‘songtitle + chords’ (no quotes) and you will get the chords. At least that has been my experience.

The best choice of chords has a lot to do with the intended style. A given melody would get one set of chords if it were to be in 'country' style, and different chords if it were in 'pop' style.

I suggest you listen to lots of different styles and decide which ones are closest to what you intend. Load the demo song for each style and see what sounds right for you. The songs/styles you chose will have charactersitc chord changes for that style.

Once we know what you are hearing in your head we can go from there.

These songs are all original. I and a friend created them in 2008 and I own the copyrighted to them.

These songs are all original; That is why I need the chord structure broken down. I can then insert the chords into them and create a more standard style to them and re-record my vocal on them.

Is anything recorded are do you just have a lyric at this point? If you just have a lyric as some have already pointed out you will have to make a few decisions regarding genre, style and tempo just for starters before any chords can be put down. I am still not sure where the starting point is at this time?

Yes, they already have lyrics to them. I took down the original page that they where on. I will just re-upload them. I will do that sometime today and you can all look at the link to hear the songs that I am talking about. The way that I and my friend recorded them is 1: drum track is a Yamaha Keyboard; he was playing the guitar in a finger picking style. Some of the songs have a rhythm tracks some are mostly guitar and a lot of keyboard instruments’. The drum track, the base, piano, synth, and other instruments’ where all recorded with a Yamaha Keyboard. These songs are all mixed, all original and I own the copyright. When I get the page done I will post a link with the songs.

Hey there Tom how are you? I have not posted in a few months due to my internet having been off. I am glad that you are around for this conversation. I deleted the page that they where on before but I will repost it sometime today. That sounds great of you could just do it for the challenge. Keep an eye on this post. I will get a ink up here today.

Having some experience at this I'll watch for the link in case I assist.

During my live band days we always worked out songs by listening to them and finding the tonic on the guitar and go from there.

You may get lots of chordal arrangement/chordal choices from the input you receive.

Should be interesting to see how your material evolves.

Carry on...

Doin' fine, m'friend -- just dealing with a lot of Real Life the past several months, not to mention working to get back into the groove of making music. Actually, I've made it a point to get back here semi-regularly, because I wasn't for so long, and it's as much fun as ever.

Yep, get us a linkie, and we'll see what we hear.

I gave a quick listen to One Golden Cross.

Maybe start with d#m to a#m.
Those are the only two chord changes I could clearly discern.

That should get you going.

Good luck...

Wow, dude! You've got long songs! Fortunately, it seems as if they're not too difficult structurally. I'll go through them over the course of the day (along with other folk, I'm sure) and we'll get 'em.

One Golden Cross -- key of D#m

The primary chords here are D#m(I), B(IV)*, and C#(V). It seems as if the basic structure is D#m / C# / D#m / C# / B / C#, with expansions on that.

*I think -- hard to tell with all the ambient & extra notes -- could be D#m6. But I'm pretty sure it's a basic B, under all the layers of sound.

Oh, and, may I make a suggestion re: marketing the songs? I realize you want to give 'em away, and that's great. But you might want to create a page on Bandcamp for the album. Bandcamp is very much front & center in online music; it'll give you a wider audience, people can listen to their hearts' content and (if you have it set to Name Your Price) still download it for free... with the added perqs of Bandcamp's tools for musicians, having a free page on which to host the album, best possible sound quality (they want your .WAVs), and if people wish to donate to you (which you deserve, given all the work put into this) they can do so, at whatever level appeals to them.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
