An unexpected brief storm today, with one lightning strike, and it was my house. No one hurt. It took out my Roland Fantom, the MIDI synth that admittedly was long in the tooth. So, I have to consider whether to convert to a software solution or buy an Integra or SD-50 or similar.

Something I've never heard before: the atomic clock (battery operated) over the desk reverted to Jan 1, 2000. Weird.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
Glad everyone is safe.

Matt,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

We had terrible dry lightning storms yesterday.

I have main house 200 amp service panel.
Did install a special arc suppressor on the house, but still unplugged my PC..

Not a lot of other equipment tho.

Due to our location in very rural area with so many power failures
each year I installed an Intermatic Main Panel Surge protector.
Purchased at home depot and installed 12 years ago.

Again real bummer on your equipment.

I highly recommend the Furman line of line conditioners/surge protectors. I have one in my rack and it saved my amps, keyboard, and computer once when a regular surge protector on the same outlet allowed a lighting strike to take out a television. The reset button on the Furman popped out but once I pushed it back in, it was still working and no damage to the equipment plugged into it.

Matthew, is there anything at all that you need? You are always there to help others, don't hesitate to make your own needs known. This bunch is totally osmosis, my friend!

Thanks again, everyone.

I do have two Furmans, and a dedicated circuit, which probably saved me from having more stuff blown out.

A Yamaha Motif rack unit should work for my MIDI, especially since there is already a patch map for it in BIAB.

People all over town are now saying, "Oh, that was Your house!".

While it may represent the impetus to get newer and better, you might want to still drop the Fantom off at a repair center if for no other reason than to get the technician's affidavit that says it is uneconomical to repair due to the strike. Then call the insurance man. But it might be a situation where the repair is only one component, such as a rectifier. Not uncommon.

Not weird to me, the field surrounding a lightning strike can be quite humongous indeed.

Interesting. That sounds like a "reverse" Y2K bug, taking us back to the time where devices were supposed to go haywire.

I discovered a second atomic clock in the adjoining room was also reset, to Jan. 1, 2004. Perhaps they go to their date of manufacture?

Mac, I have a second Fantom in another location that has power but is acting weird, so if I can get the one fixed that was fried, it will replace the other one. Thus, I'm willing to move on. Thanks.

I've always feared radiation burns from those dadblamed nuclear gadgets. Won't own
one.

Side truism: Geiger counters are illegal to own in the Southern 48 Provinces, Alaska, and Hawaii (with some exceptions) because ambient radiation levels now exceed what had previously been called "dangerous" levels.

- As told by an old uranium prosecutor.

I thought a consumer ($20) atomic clock was just a clock with a radio receiver to sync with the time signal from Colorado. No radiation from that, right?

Hi Matt:

I have a Sky Scan clock that operates the same way your Atomic clock does. I'd seriously doubt they have any radiation.

I live in Arizona and it helps if I orient my clock Northeast toward Colorado to get the signal.

Matt sorry to hear about the strike.

Matt, Keith:

Are there particular models of the Furmans that you'd recommend?

Here in northern Arizona we have lots of strikes during the summer monsoon season.

That's exactly right. The Cesium Clock itself is at one of the Standards Centers such as the NIST WWV site.

The clocks are working after being reset. The Roland Fantom has been replaced by a Yamaha Motif Rack XS, and I'll get a tech to look at the Fantom next week. At least I'm operational again.

Now I'm finding the 'other' things, like a blown instrument cable connecting the two rooms of my studio setup. Got to try everything, just to be sure.

The Furman that I have in my rack is a PL-8.

You should pick your unit based on what you need. There are a lot of bells and whistles you can get (for instance pull-out rack lights, voltage meters) that drive the price up. I can't recall the model but I have another Furman that I bought for use when I'm plugged into a portable generator because its got a 20a plug and is designed to handle the power sags and surges that happen with a generator.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
