May I ask if anyone has tried a software called Ludwig (http://www.write-music.com). It claims to do exactly what BIAB can do and is sold on Amazon, so it seems to be a legitimate software.

In your opinion, what is its quality compared to BIAB?

Thank you

Their German signature line is certainly intriguing. "Lehrer. Komponist. Band." ("Teacher. Composer. Band.") Just by scanning their home page it appears to have one major function that BIAB does not, namely, the ability to take in a melody and generate chords, something people have been asking for here for years. I have no idea about the rest of the functions, but there is a free download. Why don't you get it and see?

I am working with Ludwig from time to time. Ludwig has another focus, so ist is not a replacement for BIAB. Ludwig can do some very nice arrangements (less, verly less than BIAB), but for example Ludwig can write really good 2 or 3 or 4 voices.. Try "chorale"! That is quite different to "harmonies" which are very mechanical. And Ludwig has quite a different concept of working. Try the demo and see if it can help you.

Okay, MAJOR revision to my post above. I mistranslated "Komponist" as "accompanist." It actually means "composer," which puts this software into a whole different class. I don't think it will replace BIAB, but the two might make beautiful music together.

Site could use some work.
The footer links were done by the Department of Redundancy Department, either that or they were outsourced to Redundancy Incorporated Inc.

Very similar to Microsoft Songsmith wink which has several grooves from BIAB licenced to it.

If Ludwig works as well as Songsmith, then it would probs be a waste of money.

I noticed that the melody lines they used in their videos all had chord progressions associated with them. If I get a chance, I'll download the demo and check it out.

EDIT: This is from the user's manual

Quote:
Before Ludwig can create an accompaniment you'll have to provide chords for the melody. You can either enter these manually yourself or, under Insert > Chords > Auto Chords, simply let Ludwig do it for you.

I have downloaded it too John - just for a sticky-beak. Be aware their servers are pretty slow. Too nearly 40 minutes to d/l

Ludwig is certainly a neat package for composing. I don’t see it as a replacement of BIAB that has far and away more realistic instruments sounds in Realtracks and Super-midi. I can see Ludwig as complementing BIAB by generating easily, chords to a melody and the associated instrument parts (10 max so far for me) and fills ins. As someone has said the Chorale option does generate pleasing string part harmony. Main problem at present is that you can’t, as I understand my free version, copy each part onto a midi track in a DAW and use sample libraries. If this were possible the combinations would be great with BIAB Realtracks and or Super tracks blending in with the DAW Ludwig parts for creating a more complete orchestral product. Mind you the string parts are fairly basic in Ludwig at present (there’s very little counterpoint in the examples I have tried) but who knows this may change in future.

I stand corrected. Just read the manual. Its possible export midi or MusicXML files. Just loaded midi into Sonar and its fine. Now to add some decent sample library stuff, some BIAB backings with the same chords and tempo and that should give it the final touch.

Cheers.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
