I think his hard drive has been reverted to PIO mode by windoze.

Restore disk to DMA mode and those cpu cycles that are right now being used for disk control would likely vanish.

Good idea. Can you point him to your other thread with your instructions?

I also found this article

WmiPrvSe.exe periodically spiking CPU usage

Which do you think is the most logical path? PIO or this above article?

BTW, after this I followed the instructs for a clean boot and the stuttering went away, even with the Logitech recording, so I think this may be on the right track.

To me that would rule out the disk reversion to PIO theory, so your probably looking at some background thing running and using up the resources, or sending Interrupts when BB is playing.

The way I find that kind of culprit is by editing the startup routine, typically one suspect proggie at a time, boot up without that program being started up and then see if the interruptions are still there or not. There are downloadable little proggies that can make that a simple task, google or bing for them.

Can you tell me the name of one or two of these or what term to google?

Hey BTW, Matt, I was up in your "part of the woods" today at the "walk across the Hudson Bridge" and then at a great German restaurant in Highlands, Gunk Haus. Anyway, really nice part of the valley!

Hope you weren't caught in the brief thunderstorm. Yes, the Walkway Over the Hudson is really great.

Yes. It was great. And no, we were only able to get seats inside at the Gunk Haus so the sudden rain storm was no issue. Being from the lower Hudson Valley for the past 18 years, it was a nice treat to visit with the ex-burbs for a little while. Lately, north jersey and Rockland are becoming very over crowded and more and more like the suburbs.

Here is a nice free proggie I've used on Vista machines before.

NOTE -- When Installing the proggie, take your time and read each screen, UNcheck any installs of other items like browser addons or search engines, even may have another browser install there, don't let it install the bloatware, just the main program, "What's My Computer Doing" at the end of all that, 'K? That is how they pay for the "free" program y'know, so don't complain, just don't let it install the extra stuff if any.

Thanks Mac. I am on the link now. I see three Green buttons that contain the word "download". I am happy to download the correct one and to not load the bloatware if i can read every effing message that pops ups. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that you recommended it and that CNET hosts it and that the author wrote it. It is just that the fraud that surrounds it makes me very wary of downloading anything these days.

Well I finally cancelled the automated startup of wmi and all is AOK. I have noticed that youtube videos sometimes don't start. Is that related?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
