Dean,

I like this song a lot, and your arrangement of it is very well done. I appreciate the fact that you respected the song's message and let it have center stage instead of simply using it as an excuse to showcase your own awesome performing skills. Not that your skills don't deserve to be showcased, for (IMO) they shine like diamonds in a back-lit velvet case. But, this strikes me as a hierarchical decision in which you purposefully withheld your guitar mastery in order to let the song be itself.

Everything you have posted to the forum awes me. I shouldn't even bother to comment since my ignorance of what you do makes it all look like magic to me; But I am sufficiently moved by your compositions that words come out anyway, appropriate or not.

Pat,

I think we should definitely collaborate on one of your tunes, no Jazz. Then you'd see me flubbing around, struggling, and generally messin' up. That ought to knock me down a peg or two, and that would be a good thing.

We all lie on a continuum in all our pursuits. I've had my share of "bridge moments," referring to the saxophonist who went to see Charlie Parker for the first time. He brought his horn, thinking that he might sit in. This player wasn't exactly a Julius Caesar:

mad eek frown crazy eek mad frown crazy HE CAME, HE LISTENED, HE LEFT. eek mad frown crazy eek mad frown mad

Then, he proceeded to a bridge over the East River, where he tossed his horn. The scene appeared in Clint Eastwood's movie Bird.

I myself call these "fireplace moments," because I'll hear some player (accompanied by my jaw hitting the floor) and then decide, "Oh well, I guess we can just throw all the gear into the fireplace; maybe take up knitting."

Naturally, it's a thrill to get positive remarks from other musicians like yourself. You have my gratitude.

Dean

Hi Dean,

You took me by surprise! The last thing I expected to see when entering the forum was a song from your alter ego with my name in the subject of the post. My eyes popped open when I saw that and then I laughed laugh Then I quickly zoomed inside the thread to see what it was all about.

I have to ask, How did you know? This is EXACTLY my kind of song! It's a perfect choice. Moreover, I love what you did with it. You're one heck of a musician on so many levels. I stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pat and echo his thought, "Everything you have posted to the forum awes me".

Thank you for making my day smile

Best wishes,
Noel

Dean,

Don't know how I missed this one earlier. I've always loved this song, and you did a great job on it. I agree with Herb. I heard Rod Stewart sing this song years ago, and was super impressed. Thanks for sharing your version of it.

Very nice!! That song is one of my favorites. Ditto on the Beck/Stewart version and, if you haven't, listen to the Blind Boys of Alabama's rendition. It'll make you want to get your affairs in order! Thanks for another take on a great tune - you did it justice for sure.

I really liked the soulful vocals. This is a type of lyric that needs that real, raspy kind of expression that you nailed!

Noel - I'm so happy you liked this one. You know, Steve and other members have mentioned the Rod Stewart version.

Sometimes I'll watch a video first with the sound turned off to see if I can guess the story. I went to YouTube and did that with the Rod Stewart/Jeff Beck video of People Get Ready. My first impression was that it had to be about hobos! Jeff Beck is sitting alone with his legs hanging out of a cattle car as Rod waits alone for the train on a prairie. When I turned on the sound, Rod Stewart's screeching nearly blew my eardrums.

Are they clueless about the train as a metaphor for life, death, and possible redemption? Turning these profound realities into a rock'n'roll video that totally misses the point ... well, I couldn't stomach the rest of it.

I wanted to do a version which shows reverence and leaves the screaming rock guitar licks off the train.

Dean

Thank you so much Janice and Bud.

Well, I guess you've read my reaction to the Stewart/Beck version. Pat Marr - ever the master of insight - made a comment that reveals my thinking about how to present this noble tune. It has a timeless theme - life, death and possible redemption and so it speaks across the ages. And, it can speak personally to anyone.

I was eager to find the Blind Boys version at the Amazon MP3 download site. It seems that everything ever recorded by them is available except People Get Ready.

But I know their style, how good they are. I would bet that my rendition is more in their style and maybe it's a good thing I didn't get to hear it. No way can I compete with those guys.
