I don't recall the specific inspiration for this song but I wrote in Feb. 2011 and only performed it a handful of times - guitar/vocal. It was not well received and I tucked it away.

At my son's suggestion I pulled it out to give a BIAB treatment and have made many failed attempts at rewriting it. At last I am weary of working on it at the moment and decided to post it with the original lyrics in tact so that I can move on and maybe revisit it in the future. I have only changed the Title from the original. (from "Seventh Skin")

https://soundcloud.com/lawrence-olivier/like-february-snow

Like February Snow (2-3-11)

I've shed my seventh skin, bathed in Mississippi mud
and traded my denim for cowhide
I sleep outside a fallen barn to tease the rattle snakes inside

I've outlived all my sons and my daughters everyone
lost track of every woman that I've loved
I'm fickle now like the wind and I circle from above

I'm older than the trees, and the shade that they provide
talk to them every now and then
when you've seen the things I've seen, it's good to have a friend

...
Burdened by the deaths of those around me
Fallen like a February snow
I turn away now from the things that might be
When you've walked in my shoes then you'll truly know

I've wandered for so long you'd think I'd forgotten everything
yet somehow the memories remain
if you ask me who I am I no longer have a name

So I search now for anything to take a little solace in
but all I have are memories like ghosts
and when I finally die will heaven rest my soul?

...

Be careful what you wish for in the end

Cool guitar you open with and bring back in later - was that you playing or a RT? Very ethereal vibe with western overtones on this one made me think of a Clint or Duvall type character. Always enjoy that big voice of yours. Mix sounds great here.

I did not post the BIAB tracks but it is all BIAB. I added some effects from Guitar Rig 5.

I had not considered the western overtones but I see them now that you mention it.

Thank you for listening and commenting.

Hi Lawrence.
Its amazing how some songs we just end up fighting with for years and others come so easy. I think this one was worth the fight! Great vocals as always and the mix is great. Good job

Hi Lawrence,

It's great to hear something in a minor mode. Your writing, your mixing and your performing on this one are outstanding (just as they are on all your songs).

You have a wonderful knack for writing songs that transport me to somewhere inside myself. I don't know where but it's just great to sit back, close my eyes and listen to you. It's a gift to be able to create and to sustain the musical and lyrical soundscapes that you paint.

Very enjoyable.

All the best,
Noel

JosieC,

You are so right. In the same vain some songs I write are just bad, some are keepers, and some are just misses that are difficult to figure where they went wrong.

Thanks for listening.

Noel96, thank you, I'm glad you liked the song. I listened to a lot of Yes and Pink Floyd back in the day, maybe some of it rubbed off on me.

Lawrence,

Noel put it nicely - "..musical and lyrical soundscapes that you paint..."

You have a real talent for putting words together that make people "write their own story" to fill in the pieces. They all sounds so cool - even if you don't fully comprehend the meaning (Similar to early Springsteen).

Your vocal is REALLY well recorded on this. And the guitar-scape is delightful.

The chorus is KILLER.

"Burdened by the deaths of those around me
Fallen like a February snow
I turn away now from the things that might be
When you've walked in my shoes then you'll truly know"

WOW! (x 10)

Wow man! I was not expecting that. The vocal is fantastic. Good write, great chorus, great mix. If I was going to change anything, I would end it differently and I would look at the intro slide part. The notes seemed cut off or choppy as opposed to the lead section where it wasn't noticeable. Great song a keeper for sure. The dark songs sometimes can be the best songs. Keep writing. Tom

This is what we so much like about your writing. "older than the trees" by itself would be a good line but you ice the cake with "and the shade they provide."

And the vocal....you have that rare combo of an intriguing voice and the ability to make every syllable understood. All the better given the consistent quality of your lyrics.

I'll say it again....another one to add to the gruve playlist!

dani48, thank you for listening, glad you liked it.

Guenter, thank you for listening

Floyd, I had a version where I rewrote the chorus completely. But after days of thinking and rewrites I came back to the original. Thank you for the kind words.

PgFantastic, thank you for listening and commenting

tommyad, you are right about the cut off notes in the intro, they are the result of me chopping up the solo track to use the notes I liked best. As to the ending , I do have a version that fades out with the string quartet but thought it might be too long.

Al&Di, glad that you guys liked it, thank you

Janice & Bud, thank you for the kind comments, I'm always happy to add the gruve playlist!

I must agree; this is excellent. The lead guitar and lryics really fit well.

About the writing process, you seem to your toughest critic... that will drive you to be even better next time. I look forward to hear your next work.

Wonderful. Very pure with much feeling and authenticity. Singer/songwriter, that's you!

My favorite line, and it's hard to pick one, believe me...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
