I'm new to Band-in-a-Box and have tried connecting my Yamaha S90 keyboard/synth via USB. The program recognises the keyboard and I've selected S90-1 for input and output in midi setup. Input seems to work OK (if I use the chord builder feature, what I play on the keyboard comes out in BIAB). But when I try to output a few simple chords from BIAB the keyboard goes mad and creates a whole orchestra using all sorts of wierd sounds.

The problem seems to originate from within BIAB as all the wierd polyphony shows up in the BIAB keyboard display. I've tried selecting some of the other midi driver options S90-2, S90-3 etc but these just crash BIAB.

What should I do?

I've used Band in a box for years and my daughter has a Yamaha keyboard. Never could get that sucker to work right. All the other synths I have work fine, a Roland-Rogers keyboard, a Roland JV1010, and a ketron sd2.

And the built in soft synths work fine except for the Dxi on Vista 64.

I usually use the built in soft synths and put the midi out to that, or the ketron, and use my keyboard as in only, and get the sounds from elsewhere.

Be aware that none of the sounds are coming from band in a box if you are using midi, that is 100 percent due to your midi keyboard or box.

Some other folks here may have a solution, but I've yet to hear a Yamaha keyboard I liked better than the Dxi synth, which you can play using the midi in cable and the thru channel to pick you instrument. Once you save the song with the thru patch you chose, you can load the song later and don't need to adjust the keyboard settings at all.

*PS must be set to MULTI mode.

*PS must be set to GM or GS mode. (can be done in BB GM menu IF the PS is set up to receive the command properly)

*Inside BIAB Prefs -> Output Chords -- make sure that Output Chords is not checked.

*You may have to do a hard Reset to your keyboard to put everything back to factory settings first.

The S90 manual has no reference to 'multi' how else might that be referred to?

I viewed an online .pdf manual from the Yamaha site for the S90 before replying.

That manual can be downloaded from HERE.

May be differing versions of the S90, don't know, please check the above manual to see if it matches your machine.

Mac - sorry to be a pain. That is the correct manual but I still can't find anything about milti/gs/gm modes. What page is it on? I've searched the PDF but that doesn't show these terms either. cheers Ian

Do a Search in Adobe Reader on that file, "multi" and then look for "Multi mode" in the returned items.

Multi would probably refer to MultiTimbral. You can see the instructions on page 80 of the manual. However, taking the time to read and understand the features of the S90 would be a worthwhile investment in time and energy, as you'll be able to get a lot out of that keyboard.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

"Using the S90 as Multi-Timbral tone generator (Mixing Edit)" Page 80

Read the manual front to back, also note there's several other manuals or guides on that website too.
In the index at the back, look up "General Midi". It sounds like when the S90 receives a "GM On" message, it will automatically go into GM mode once you're in the Mixer. Make sure Biab sends the GM On command and you should be all set. If not, then using your "Bank" buttons, select the GM bank.
This should get you started but note that the other banks probably have better sounding instruments than the GM bank does so after you at least get it working, you can start experimenting with sounds from the other banks for your Biab songs using your Mixer. The reason for that is the GM standard is limited but at least it is standard for everybody. Example, there's only a couple of electric pianos in a GM bank but the S90 probably has a whole bank full of different EP's. When you're playing a GM sequence like one from Biab, and you're using the GM bank you will hear a EP and that's good but selecting another one from a different soundbank will probably sound much better depending on the song. The only thing is now you're changing patches for each song instead of simply leaving it in the GM bank and forgetting about it. It's a matter of how picky do you want to be with the sounds.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
