I’m really new to this software, so my wish may already be a possibility, or completely absurd. Could someone please let me know if this is impossible, or point me in the right direction if it is not?
I’m recording tracks on an external recording deck and then importing the wav file into RB to add Real Drums and hopefully a Real string quartet to the background. For me, the preset arpeggios are difficult to use with my prerecorded audio files.
In the future I will record my projects directly into RB and contour my work around the presets, but until I can acquire the hardware to do this, I wondering if there might be a simpler work around.
My question, is there any way to control the preset string tracks or add a more usable string variation to the mix? Such as just having a cello, viola, violin and double bass simply hold a long bow note in unison or four part harmony, producing just a single chord or notes of a basic chord progression, or scale in any particular major or minor key.

You might have to invent this yourself. You could add your own notation e.g. on the Melody or Soloist tracks, and use a MIDI synth or DXi. There are many string sounds available in MIDI synths, but some tend to be unnatural, especially for long held notes.
I have been using Native Instruments Session Strings plugin, which could definitely handle what you want to do, and the sampled sounds are extremely good. It handles Double Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin, and would allow you to create a 'string ensemble' using any notation form that you would like.
There's a video also on YouTube:
Hope this helps

BIAB & RB2024 Win.(Audiophile), Sonar Platinum, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Izotope Prod.Bundle, Roland RD-1000, Synthogy Ivory, Kontakt, Focusrite 18i20, KetronSD2, NS40M Monitors, Pioneer Active Monitors, AKG K271 Studio H'phones
You use the free Kontakt 5 player as a plugin in BiaB or Real Band, and add your required instruments into the player. All done therefore inside the program.
It's not a hardware device, it's a completely integrated software solution.
