Best 1-minute UserTracks Contest - 3 Prizes BiaB UltraPAK Hard Drive

Announcing the "Best 1-minute UserTracks"....

We will award 3 prizes of a Band-in-a-Box Hard drive to the winner in the following categories:

- Best Pop UserTracks
- Best Jazz UserTracks
- Best "Unique" UserTracks

Entries open to submission until March 31, 2014

We are looking for UserTracks that sound good, and are useful in many situations.

- Multiple submissions are welcome (with different UserTracks), and multiple submissions help your chances of winning. For example, if you submit 10 "good" entries, it may beat one "great" entry.
- UserTracks longer than 1 minute are welcome (for example, you could transpose the 1 minute file up a fourth, and record a second song, so that you have more material, or you can add your own completely unique progressions)
- you need to submit the UserTracks as a single .zip file, downloadable from your site as a link (this could be a DropBox, Google drive, yousendit link etc.). You would zip the UserTracks folder that you have made. Here is a YouTube video showing how to use DropBox to share files publicly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jDVGDu9ymk
- Customers are free to be able to download and use your UserTracks that you have created, and use it for free. You can remove it from your download link at any time, since you are hosting it on your site. So these submissions should be thought of as contributions to the Band-in-a-Box community.
- each submission should be a separate thread in the UserTracks Contest Forum. If you make more than one UserTracks, start new threads for each of them.

Please make the submissions to the "Best 1-minute UserTracks Contest" forum, before the deadline.

We'll announce the winners in early April.

What will you get out of it?
- some experience in making UserTracks
- free publicity- if you plan on making more UserTracks in the future, as a commercial venture, people will know your work from these entries.
- goodwill from contributing to the Band-in-a-Box community, and knowledge that your recording is used to help others with their songs.

So please make some 1-minute UserTracks... You can find out the details here http://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=243569#Post243569

Make sure that you watch the video on how to make a UserTracks in under 10 minutes

Peter, would you ever consider something like this for a person that does not currently use BIAB/RB? Perhaps it's not even possible, I don't know.

According to the instructions that are inside the zip file...

"You also can make UserTracks even if you don't have Band-in-a-Box or RealBand. To do this, simply download the "Making UserTracks without Band-in-a-Box or RealBand" template file. This has instructions for making UserTracks using other DAWs besides Band-in-a-Box or RealBand. For example, you could record yourself in Protools, and send the resulting files to your friend who DOES have Band-in-a-Box, and they'd be able to use them as UserTracks!"

Hi Scott,

Yes, making in another DAW is possible.

Since the Pop Template is matched to a BiaB song which is set to a tempo of 120, you would need to record a WAV file that has a tempo of 120, following the chord progression in the PDF (don't forget the 2 bar lead-in!), and then save the audio from the DAW as a 16 bit 44K, mono or stereo WAV file, named the same name as the BiaB song.
e.g.

MySong.sgu <-------------- BiaB song
MySong.wav <-------------- 44k, mono or stereo wav recorded in your DAW

If you put those 2 files in a folder that you name as your User Tracks name (e.g. Ukulele, Rhythm Syncopated Ev 120, or anyname (e.g. My Cool Ukulele) then it will show up as a UserTracks and play it.
Other than that, you would make it the same way as described in the video tutorial, and for the contest purposes, all entries are eleigible including ones made with other DAWS.

Tobin is making a video showing making a UserTracks with another DAW (probably ProTools), that should be ready within a week.

Thanks for the replies. As I have exactly 5-6 nights left in the month when I might be able to do this, it's not looking real positive - but I'm going to give it a try. Is Tobin's video up anywhere yet?

At the moment there is no video available, however Tobin has written a tutorial on how to make UserTracks without using Band-in-a-Box or RealBand, which can be read here.

Good luck!

Thanks Callie,

Unfortunately, without owning BIAB or RB, it appears that one cannot follow Tobin's instructions because of his instructions that state that one selects the BIAB song that matches the tempo, and save the audio file as well as the sgu file. I would be able to make .wav files, but not .sgu files. I think that means I can't participate at this point in time.

Without BIAB I believe you need to take the "midi" file and use it to play against. That way you can have a steady tempo. All they should need from you is to play against the chord sheet and for the audio file to be named such that it identifies the tempo.. Do I have that right?

No, the tempo is taken from the BiaB song.

The contest sounds like a good way to drum up interest in the user tracks! I haven't delved into the user tracks yet (except for using Floyd's hand claps) and I don't think I will have much time this month to try it out. Maybe next month I can reap the benefits of the contest!

Great idea, Peter! I've just uploaded a few, very basic bass Usertracks that I made just as a test. I'm trying to record more complex and useful Usertracks and I will post them here if I can get something decent wink

But we are talking about a person wanting to submit RT's who does not have BIAB. I guess I have to agree it is a bit confusing. But good luck to all.

The template zip file (http://www.pgmusic.com/zip/UserTracks_without_Band-in-a-Box_Pop_1minutetemplate.zip) contains a folder that has Band-in-a-Box songs at multiple tempos, starting at 50bpm, then 55, 60, 65, etc. all the way up to 300bpm. So, for example, if you've recorded the chord progression in Protools at 115bpm, just pick the file <Song_1m_Pop_1_115.SGU> from that zip, and you can then have a working UserTrack that you can share with Band-in-a-Box users, without even using Band-in-a-Box yourself.

As mentioned, there will be a video demonstrating this soon.

I hope that helps!

I tried the templates with waltzes in a few tempi, but the user tracks did not work, when I tried them in biab. The user tracks work however with 4/4 as my user tracks for the contest proove.
Any help ?

OK, now this makes sense - thanks for the video - unfortunately about 2 weeks too late for me to 'get it'!

Dang - I'm heading out of town tonight and not returning until the 31st late. I'm not going to be able to participate in the contest.

I might offer up a few of these after the contest is over, just to see how the process works for the end user.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
