Hi Folks,
I just purchased a 2TB External drive to get most of the songs and junk off of my C: drive. I need to know which parts of the programs (BIAB 2012 and RB)must remain on the C: drive and what I can move to my external. Also, what paths would I have to change for the program to be able to locate my songs. I am a bit of a techno-phobe, so I thank you all for your indulgence. I am also using Sonar,---should I create different folders for each program? Thank you in advance!

You have lots of choices. As for the folders, let each program install into its default folder. SONAR uses many, actually. BIAB uses C:/bb

For BIAB, you could install the entire program to your external drive and run it from there. You would then be able to delete the entire C:/bb folder.

As a partial move, you could move the RealTracks and RealDrums folders to the external drive and then go into Preferences, RealTracks and Preferences, RealDrums and point to the new location. If you do this, leave everything else in C:/bb because there are many .STY, .ST2 and .XT2 files you must still have in the folder where the program runs from. This is the way I have mine installed. However, I do not recommend this solution if you have any hesitation about your ability to manipulate files on your computer.

BIAB 2024 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 6.5 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6; Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus Studio 192, Presonus Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors

If drive space is an issue, you can just copy the entire bb folder over to the new outrigger drive and then check to see that it runs okay before deleting the c:\bb folder.

The only thing that will be left on the c: drive from the full bb install will be the PG Music Fonts, the PG Music Plugins and any DXi softsynths you may have installed, because those are the only parts that write to the eindows registry and you should leave them on the c: drive because the program needs them there in order to run everything correctly. they take up very little space.

Chuck, if files are a mess on your C:\ drive, then they will soon be a mess on the big external drive. File management is crucial, so get a plan and stick to it, "a place for everything and everything in its place."

"Search"

"Find File"

Asterisks at both ends of a string you recall, like '*mystupidsong*...

I'd be inclined to copy the entire c:\BB folder to your removable drive, and then run the install again. See the "Band-in-a-Box External Hard Drives" section of the BB User guide PDF for more info on this.
As well, consider backing up your own unique data when you're doing this. You can always reinstall BB after a crash, but you'll be sad without your original songs and user styles.
Best of luck,
David

I've upgraded BiaB to the latest version every year since '98 by simply running the new version's Installer pointing to c:\bb right overtop of the existing installation.

And in all those years have never lost a single songfile, custom style, or anything else by doing that.

BB will not overwrite nor delete any existing files in the folder.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
