Hi, I am finally getting the time to get out and jam a bit. To maintain this activity I am practicing 2/3 hours a day. I have allocated an hour to cycle through an ever expanding list of songs using BIAB. To communicate with other jamming partners (and potential future jamming partners) I have the songs I can do on Facebook in 4 categories.
1/ Can play all parts including melody and solos:
2/ Working on. Can do all parts within 1 week:
3/ Can do basic rhythm and comping:
4/ Can do basic rhythm and comping with a lead sheet at sight on any song that is no faster than tempo 160 with chords occurring no faster than 1 per bar. Solos may be possible if the chords are fairly easy.

So the idea is this. By letting others know, what parts I can and can not do, we can coordinate to increase the number of songs we can jam together (more variety for more interesting jams) and also better target what we want to practice. In other words if so and so is doing this song maybe I should learn it or at least learn the chords first and post that I can do this much for now.

Here are the questions.
How do I easily tell a new or existing jamming partner what chords I am using without emailing the BIAB files one by one? How do I invite a new person to jam while at the same time giving them the songs list and the chords I am using to play that song (and the melody for that matter)?

One idea is to store the BIAB files to the songs I am playing in a web site others can download from.

More questions.
What site? Do I need a separate web site for the songs list and the BIAB files? Do I need a single zip archive or can I have them split out into one file per song? Can I give out a link that takes people right there? Can I make it an easy link such as "www.whatever.com\JohnBowles\BIAB\" where they can see all the BIAB song names in alpha order. Can I put a comment on each song to show what parts I can play "example: Misty-75:RC, Four-150,RCMS (R=Rhythm, C=Comps, M=Melody, S=Solos)" Can I make it read only so it cannot get hacked? Can I give the link or the directory a password so only the jamming partner can get at the BIAB files.

Thanks,
John

I found a solution for now.

I have to give out two links. I have the song list on Facebook and can give out that link via email. I signed up for DropBox and can give a person a link to get at the BIAB song files so they can practice with them (obviously they have to buy BIAB before they can use the files to practice against if they do not know the songs).

Hi, John !

You can use dropbox or box or soundcloud
(and I guess there are a lot of other
similar sites where you can drop your
files for free and send the links by
email to your partners!:))
I mostly use box myself as it can play mp3:s
and midis and a lot of other formats too
(but not every format)! They are working
on enlargening the field for more audio and
videoformats so that your partners don´t
necessarily need even to download the file but can
play it right away ! :))

Here is an example of a mp3 dropped
into my box:

Cheers
Dani

Hi Dani

I will have to check our your MP3 when I get home and the sound system is better.

There do seem to be a lot of them. I found this great review using the google search "web file storage reviews"

http://online-storage-service-review.toptenreviews.com/

I rejected "JUST CLOUD" BECAUSE the receiver had to have an account. It was nice because I could put a longer comment in rather than just the song BIAB file name. I know someone who uses dropbox already and he loves it so for now I went that route. I will have to dig in more and maybe get back to this thread to let others know what can be done for size, comments, and links where the user does not need to have an account.

So far the best site I have found is "Google Drive". It gives 15 gig free at the moment and you can give out the link so the user can go directly to that site for downloads without having to have an account. The negative is it has a comment but they have it off in a very remote location so it is essentially useless (you can not see it listed right beside the file name). However I have decided that not having a comment is fine since I can not sort the "Band In A Box" files into my 4 categories mentioned above anyway. It is also a lot easier for me to organize the list of songs on FaceBook anyway. So I just give out 1 link for a new jamming partner and if they want to join in and want to see the BIAB files I give them the other link.

I have discovered on thing. Microsoft (OneDrive? or SkyDrive?) reduced their free space from 25 gig down to 7 gig once they were popular. I think DropBox did the same (an existing user said he thought it was 25 gig but for sure it is now at 2 gig).

I also discovered that moving 10 files in one directory up to DropBox for downloads was fast but if I tried a directory that has a lot of other directories and a lot of files in those directories for a total of 1.7 gig it ran more than 12 hours and did not get them all up there. I ended up shutting off the machine and clearing out the dropbox folder.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
