if you have a bunch of USB drives that came with a previous version of BIAB, and you don't know what to do with it, here's one idea:
If your car has a USB port for connecting an MP3 player to the car stereo, it might also be able to play MP3s directly from a storage device (like thumb drive or USB drive)
The amount of storage on one of those drives is probably enough to put your whole music collection in the car.. plus some talking books and who knows what else.

If your car is like mine, you'll want to use one of the newer drives that ship without that 'Y' USB cable. The drives requiring the 'Y' cable require more power.

Bob, no, not in my car. I'm saying, drives with the 'Y' cable will not work in my car, with its one USB port. That one port must not supply enough current.

I've added USB plugs via the cigarette lighter. You can get attachments that add multiple extra plugs for things like GPS, phone charging etc

Good idea. Again, in my car, the cigarette lighter is taken up for the charger for my phone. The USB port for the audio does not provide enough current to charge the phone.
I suppose cars differ? I could go back to the old clumsy 'Y' 12-volt adapter, but I'm happy to be rid of it, for a cleaner look in the console.
Of course, this all may work well for you, and Pat's idea is a good one.

alternatively , large capacity thumb drives are now affordable, they don't require extra power to work, and its a challenge to fill them up with MP3s I have been doing this first with a cheap aftermarket in-dash player from Dual, and now in my 2011 Malibu for over 5 years. Here's what I have found in so doing - my listening habits have evolved over this time. I am an addict of Noisetrade.com . I am refreshing my listening selections regularly, with about 10% of the Noisetrade.com downloads as 'keepers' that I return to. I really wouldn't want to tax the in-dash player with driving a hard disk. I'm also a podcast addict of sorts: Car Talk, Sound Opinions, This American Life (all from NPR/PRI) KEXP Music That Matters, all in regular rotation. It feels like radio, but it's what I feel like listening to, when I want to listen to it. The Apple iOS 7 Podcast app is much better for managing podcasts than iTunes. Deleting old episodes off of the device is easy-peasy. My Malibu radio will connect to the iPhone with reasonable ease.

I guess I'm just old fashioned, I have a 16GB iPod with almost 10,000 songs on it.
My musical tastes have also evolved, and I have a huge LP and CD collection, so I ripped everything but the symphonies and other pieces that are too long for driving around town (that 'driveway moment' could be a half hour or more).
I put it on random play so I get a mix, and when I hear a song that I just don't listen to anymore, I enjoy it as if I were meeting an old friend.
Perhaps when the iPod "bytes the dust", I'll put everything on a flash drive. I do keep a copy of all the iPod tunes so if it goes belly-up I haven't lost any music, and I don't have to through the time consuming process of ripping my collection again.
I don't think I'd trust a spinning HD in my car, the hot Florida sun when I'm parked might not get along with the HD innards. I could be wrong about that though, I'm not a tech.

the small drives on which BIAB is delivered are solid state, aren't they? Basically just a MUCH larger thumb drive

The ones I get are quite large - almost 1 TB - for the audiophile version. They are definitely mechanical hard drives. A solid state drive of that size would cost more than they charge for the product.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
