Sampletank 3 releases this week and is 64 bit. Will it be able to still work with Band in a Box?

Thanks,

Terry

Yes, I'm anxious to see how this might affect the GM package, Omnisynth 2. I know some run this well with BIAB, but it has been just frustrating enough for me that I don't use it often. I'm also curious if the new sounds will be significantly better. I always felt horns were the Achilles heel of Sampletank - the demos on the IK page don't sound significantly better, but I'll wait for the finished product and reviews.

I never had much problem with ST II, but yes, horn sampling/modeling, is never very good as solo instruments, in an ensemble sometimes is ok, unless you go to a very expensive one, and know how to play it on a midi controller in order to get all the nuances right.

I would think that since both are VSTi's you must explicitly load, then the release of ST3 won't affect ST2 from continuing to work on your system. It remains to be seen if ST3 will work at all with BIAB (using for example jBridge), but ST2 should still continue to function as it always has.

But it still seems to me that with even IK-Multimedia going 64-bit (they seemed to be the holdout, with all their previous synths strictly 32-bit, and now SampleTank as their first 64-bit offering), then it's just going to be a matter of time before PGMusic will need to follow suit, if for anything other than compatibility reasons.

I have confirmation from IK that ST3 and ST2 will reside and work side-by-side as it were. I'll find out Thursday or Friday when I get it all downloaded and installed.

BTW I didn't buy ST 3 BECAUSE it's 64 bit, I'm still running EVERYTHING, including Sonar X3 Producer, and other "dual bit" apps as 32 bit. As you can see below I have a machine that is more than capable of running all SW at 64 bit, so it's not for lack of capability. I have yet to NEED 64 bit and I OWN all the usual suspects of DAW's and VST's/VSTi's.

ST3 will be first 64 bit ONLY app I've ever bought. Just couldn't pass up upgrade price because yes, in a few years (probably more like 3 to 4) things will truly all be ONLY 64 bit (but only when the enter world, and all of industry-go 64 bit). NO, I won't be using or even trying to use a "bridging" app to run 64 bit ST 3 with 32 bit BIAB.

MS is STILL selling a 32 bit only OS, and it's called: (drum roll) ...Windows 8.1!

Love 'em or hate 'em, if there were zero market, or effectively a financially zero market, MS wouldn't STILL be offering a 32 bit only OS in this 2nd quarter of 2014.

Now let the hate posts for this 64 bit heretic begin.

John I do believe that Amplitube 3 was their first 64 bit program. If came as both 32 and 64 bits, like many other products including Sonar.

I agree that eventually PGMusic will have to go to 64 bit, I just hope that it is not too late.

No hate posts from this pro 64 bit advocate. I think there is room for both as of today but that will probably change tomorrow.

I believe that those using RTs are happy with 32 bit and those using MIDI are not as most of the really good MIDI sound sources are 64 bit. This is because of the ram needed need for those VSTis.

I also believe that MS is still offering 32 bit systems is because industry has a lot of proprietary programs running in 32 bit. It may be easier to convert them to a new 32 bit OS than to a new 64 bit OS, don't really know. However I think those days are numbered also.

Sampletank is a plugin. ST 3 is 64 bit only and 64 bit plugs require a 64 bit host. It's not the computer, it's the host program.

As long as Biab and RB are 32 bit you can't use ST3 or any other 64 bit plugin unless some kind of third party compatibility program works for that.

ARC 2, T-Racks, CSR and AmpliTube are all 64 bit. This is not our first 64 bit application, but it will be our first only 64 bit application. As technology grows, older technology isn't supported as much in favor of newer technology.

The other apps, e.g. Amplitube 3, are 32 or 64 bit, whereas SampleTank 3 is 64 bit only.

it means they have released 64 bit apps before but those also had 32 bit versions. this one will be 64 bit only. at least that is what it says to me! smile

Yes, but those aren't synths; those are effects.

Basically IKM is telling a bunch of us old farts it's time to get with the program and stop living in the past.

The problem with that is they're in the wrong forum. Only a handful here cares about 64 bit. I have no idea how many young hip kids use Biab but few of them are posting here probably because they're too busy partying to EDM with DJ's. Not exactly Biab's forte.

As a keyboard player I see this all the time in video demos of new gear from Yamaha, Roland, etc. Literally out of a 15 minute demo there might be 15 seconds of the presenter playing what we would call real music. The rest is EDM/rap/dubstep type stuff and that is most of the market for IKM as well.

Bob,

I FULLY concur with both sentiments:

1) re: in general, demos DO NOT show off MUSICAL capability - mainly "tech" and tech "music" capability and ,

2) most music companies target audience is much younger, and looking for different "music" support, applications, uses, etc. than us old farts (and I'm 3 times retired, once from Active Duty). However, I can't blame any company for targeting the demographic that spends the most money on a given product.

Now, and this is just because I implied I would:

I've downloaded ST3 (still downloading the sound libs), installed it and as courteous "FYI Report:" Both ST 2 and ST 3 load and run fine and at same time. Plus ST3 is actually installed in the same PARENT directory (obviously not the SAME directory) as ST 2 stuff (actually on my D:\Music\... drive).

Also as fully expected and also as fully KNOWN: BIAB, RB, and PT don’t like the 64 bit ST3 VSTi

Larry

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
