Hey guys, just ran into a problem. I'm an old old Ventures fan and have these 69 Venture Midi files created by Don Walker (no relation). Opened them up in BB and imported them through the Head Phone jack to my Jam Man XT Solo in order to jam along with the ones I know and learn the ones I don't know. However, they are not in the key BB says they are in. They are slightly off. For instance, Sleepwalk is suppose to be in the key of C in the midi file but it exports out to somewhere between Db and C but not right on the Key of C. Is there a way in BB to make sure that they (the midi files) are in the correct key, in other words, can I tune them up to a full C chord, or do I need another piece of software to do this? Thanks for you help in advance.
PS> Right now, I'm just adjusting my guitar to compensate, but I'd rather not do that.

I've heard of a similar problem with audio files when the sample rate was 48 KHz instead of 44.1, and the pitch is off between two and three steps high. But MIDI? I don't know how a MIDI file could have that problem. I'm not in front of BIAB at the moment but check out MIDI Monitor or something like that, I think it's in the Windows menu. Look for some control code at the beginning of the file. Still, in MIDI, it could only be off by a half-step or full step, nothing in between (I think).

Further thought. What's your MIDI sound source? Does it have a mixer with a pitch control setting, as a keyboard might?

Or is the Jam Man XT looper playing MIDI? If so, in the Setup menu, is there a pitch control?

some thoughts

import the file in realband see if you gut the same results
check the event List to make Sure the notes are all in the key
use musescore as an alternate MIDI program to verify

Check for pitch bend data in the MIDI files. That is another way to get a MIDI file's pitch shifted by less than a semitone.

If possible could you upload a file ? I would be glad to take a look at it.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Hi David,

Under the "GM" menu, there is an option for "Master Tuning".

This may or may not help as it is dependent on the soundcard you have. Some soundcards do not respond to the master tuning option.

Some other thoughts ...

1. Have you tried disconnecting the effects pedal and double-checking that the midi is still out of tune.

2. Try opening the midi in Windows media player (or other audio program) and check that the pitch is still different.

3. What do you use to tune your guitar? Is the tuner set to A = 440 Hz?

Hope these ideas help.

Regards,
Noel

Matt,
Thanks for your reply. I'm using a Sound Blaster FX soundcard for output. I'm taking the sound from the headphone jack directly into JamMan XT Solo Looper pedal. I've never checked to see if it has a mixer with a pitch control setting, but I will.

MarioD. Thanks for your reply. I have never uploaded a midi file before so I don't know how to get it to you. If you do a search for free Midi files Sleep Walk by the Ventures you can download it there. Same file. You'll see midi files by the Ventures from Don Walker. Select the Sleep Walk File to download. Or, you can send me an e-mail link and I'll send it to you that way. Thanks for your help. my email address is hdw493407@yahoo.com

Found GM as you suggested. How do I know if output is in tune and how much (semitones) would I have to raise the pitch? I would assume I would connect a tuner to headphone jack and adjust for there. Is that correct? Thanks for your help. As you can see by my responses to Matt and Mario, I don't know how to answer you all on one page in the forum. Sorry about that. Thanks again.l\

Noel, just to answer the above questions. 1. I plug it directly to the JamMan xt solo and plug my headphones into phone jack of JamMan. No change. 2. Tried Windows media player and BB at same time, no change in pitch was detected. I use a Boss Guitar tuner to tune all my guitars and yes A is set to 440 Hz..

I tried turning up the semitones while song was playing but could not tell a difference in pitch. I will try opening in Real Band and see what tuning is like there. Thanks again for yur ideas and help.

David, sorry to report this but I did download the file and it plays in the key of C perfectly. So ether you got a bad download or something at your end is changing the pitch. I will send you a PM.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
