changing the piano instrument from acoustic to electric piano on a song and saving using the Save With Patches & Harmonies;

closing the song and when I reopen the song the piano has changed back to acoustic piano

can't figure out why my song won't save the changed instrument patch...

bobbol,

If you have a look under the "Help" menu and then select "About Band In A Box", you'll see something like "Version 2014 (384)".

The '384' indicates what update is installed. The latest update is 384 and, before doing anything else, it would be wise to check that this is installed. If not, follow the Support link at the top of the webpage to download it and then install it.

Regards,
Noel

That would be a good example of a CC command embedded in you midi file. This is typical if you are using a midi track imported from an external midi file and someone wanted to be sure it played the way they intended it to. Use the event editor to see if a CC is present.

issues are still instrument changes don't save and neither do volume changes;

I'm an intermediate MIDI user and I've been poking around some of the MIDI without success; but thinking that there is something more fundamentally wrong here

Hi bobol,

If you click on my nickname (Noel96) to the left of this text and then select "View Profile", you'll find an email address that you can send the file to. I agree with Dan. It would be good to try out the file.

Regards,
Noel

This is why everyone needs a free dropbox account. Just place the file there and then insert a link here.

If you open a midi file in BB, you first need to open the file with the big green sequencer button. The sequencer window then displays all the midi channels, allowing you to make edits- change patches, re-channel, etc.

Hi again, Bob.

Thank you for sending the file over. It has given me some ideas.

When I opened the file, in the Style Information window, I saw ...

In the Mixer window, the above style opens the instruments shown below. Notice that the Bass and the Piano tracks have yellow text while the Drum track has green text. This indicates that the Piano and Bass tracks contain MIDI instruments while the Drum track is Realdrums.

What I suspect you are seeing in the Style Window is shown in the image below. Notice the slightly different name (_BOSSAP. STY as opposed to BOSSA2.STY). Also notice that the name begins with an underscore. This underscore indicates that the style is a Realtstyle and contains all Realtrack instruments.

This is confirmed when looking at the Mixer window since all the instrument text is green in colour.

Before I continue with the post, could you please double check and let me know which style file loads with your song? That is, is it the MIDI-based one or the Realtracks-based one?

Regards,
Noel

Hi Bob,

That's confused me because I felt sure that the option "Auto-replace MIDI styles with Realtrack styles ..." was engaged. I was wrong. If you see Bass and Piano in yellow, it means that MIDI styles are loading and not being replaced by Realstyles.

With your song file, changes to the patches, panning and volume all save fine for me when I tested it.

What I'd try is ...

1. Save the file with a new name and see if that helps.

If that doesn't work ...

2. Under "Opt", reset to factory settings (choose the upper option and you won't need to re-do the soundcard settings).

NOTE: Once you return to factory settings, the option "Auto-replace MIDI styles with Realtrack styles ..." will be re-engaged and this will prevent loading MIDI styles.

To deactivate the "Auto-replace" option, follow the 1, 2, 3 on the image below.

Regards,
Noel

That is why we encourage folks to upload a problem file. It can be the quickest path to this conclusion.

IMPORTANT UPDATE
having heard nothing useful from support for about a week (yes that is a whine about the support we get or don't get from PG) today I noticed:

** Opt/Return to Factory Settings **

and that was the fix! now when I change volumes and instruments and save the file, the re-opened file has saved the settings
YAWHOO

now maybe pushes will work again but one thing at a time

(special thx to Noel96 - no worries Mate! - for the response - even tho his ideas were not a fix for my particular problem I learned a heck of a lot about RealDrums vs MIDI!!)

Glad you found the fix.

Did you try to call support on the phone? I find they always answer during business hours. But I do admit the user forum will generally provide a quick answer. The "RTFS" is very often the first thing to do when things get strange.

And regarding Noel, yes he is a treasure.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
