I have looked at the forum and tried what has been suggested, still no joy. Here's my problem- I'm trying to edit together separate midi files and compile them in the melody track. It's all just melody material that I create by using another program that converts printed notation to midi files.

Importing whole midi files into the melody track in BIAB is no problem, but as soon as I try to copy a section from a separate midi or song file and try to paste it in another song, things go horribly wrong....

Is the mac way different to PC? It really should be a simple thing, but is proving to be ridiculously convoluted, like first year amateur shareware! So many years to get the basics right, yet it is still awkward and clunky. What's going on?

Frustrated.....

Hi,

I'm sure others will chime in with their thoughts ... In the meantime, I don't think that what you are after can be done between different songs in BIAB. The main reason is that BIAB is not a DAW. It's accompaniment generation software. If you want to do what you describe, I'd be using a DAWor a midi editor.

My DAW is Reaper. Although I purchased a copy, the program can be downloaded and used for free for as long as you like. There is a Mac version. It might be worthwhile having a look at this program at ...

I've heard of Reaper for a while now but never checked it out until now. $60 ??, that is good news.
Maybe now I can retire my OLD Cubase 5.5. and "dongle" -- what a pain in the ... (expensive s/w and upgrades too).

Off to YouTube to check out the software.
Thanks for the link.

Some of that, copying, can be done with RealBand. It is tricky, but managable: Just import the songs you want/need into the same working-song in RealBand and do your thing.

Convoluted GUI? Maybe, but once you get to know what feature hides behind the icons, there is no faster way to access these. After all the developers worked to improve the software. They just didn't have time to waste on a GUI that did the tricks they wanted in the first place. It just didn't/doesn't look modern. I don't care.

From Mac Forum:
Can you use MuseScore, it will open BiaB files and midi files in Tabs and you can copy from one to another then export the midi into the melody track.
MuseScore

Or something like Aria Maestosa

Princeplanet,

I used to be able to do exactly what you're describing when BB would save the midi files as an MGX file.

Since the last release, BB apparently wants to save the file as an SGU file.

You can still go to the main toolbar to MELODY- EDIT MELODY TRACK and import melody
(or melodies) from a midi file and save as an MGU file.

I have BB for Windows, so none of this may apply to the MAC version.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
