Thanks for posting. It's quite enlightening to hear The Beatles isolated and especially how much talking, finger snapping and shuffling that went on during the recordings.

I found a clip on YouTube of Paul's vocals isolated like this of "Oh Darling" and used it for personal educational purposes to use a vocal track and create a BiaB backing track. I also wanted to experiment with the ACW feature and how effective it was in mapping tempo with no instrumentation other than vocals.

I was able to get a usable tempo map, chose UKPWRBAL.sty which is midi and added 1577 piano real track. I had to average the tempo and set it at 58. I exported the individual audio files into Studio One and used time stretching to align the vocals precisely to the music.

It matched up really well but I did not do the whole song as it was just for fun and learning and was pretty tedious work once everything was in Studio One. I completed a verse and chorus and then faded out.

As you see in this clip, the vocals and background are included and there is little you can do with them and of course the audio is low resolution but an acceptable recording was achievable. Not broadcast quality.

It was a fun exercise but I'm not sure I would want to attempt 16 plus minutes like this video has.

On one of the Anthology cd there is a cut of just the vocal tracks to "Because" from Abby Road. The layers upon layers of harmony, and the tasteful application of spatial effects will almost put you in a trance, especially listening through headphones.

The BeeGees reproduced a similiar arrangement to good effect on the Sgt. Peppers movie soundtrack.

Unfortunately the video has fallen victim to the politics of GEMA and is not available in Germany. GEMA has an ongoing war with youtube for royalties on video content available in Germany. Although youtube pays for copyrights elsewhere, and the video does not originate in Germany GEMA sees it in their power to block it. I'm all for artist getting their fair share of the royalties, but because GEMA wants more than everybody else, video broadcasting in Germany suffers. If they could block internet radio they would do that as well. End of rant.

Other Beatles acapella: Some early stereo recordings have the Beatles singing on one channel and playing on the other.

I've also heard that out-take. I think you can hear a strong Brian Wilson influence in these choral tracks that wasn't present before they started hanging out.

I had not thought about the tracks in that light but, after reading your post and listening again, I agree.

Macca has said over the years that "God Only Knows" is his favorite song. The two bands influenced each other quite a bit. "Rubber Soul" gave the impetus to "Pet Sounds", "Pet Sounds" begot "Sgt. Pepper", etc.

The Beatles were great singers, but for pure, organic harmonies, I don't think anyone could top this:

And, this little ditty sung by Carl:

It's wonderful how much previously unreleased, or single track material is becoming available. In some ways the internet and in particular YouTube has become a valuable resource for learning more about our music history.

Surfer Girl has always been a beautiful song. Most likely the best song of its type by the Beach Boys. To me it's even better without the backing tracks and heavy production effects. Thanks for sharing the links.

We lived in SoCal for 15 years, and the Beach Boys captured the soul of that era perfectly. Most people think that surfers are beach bums, but it takes a lot of dedication to be a real surfer. Gnarly, dude! grin

I've always loved "Surfer Girl" as well, but my favorite is still "God Only Knows". Pure genius.

I also appreciate the post. Raw (dry) tracks would be even better.
It's pretty amazing how hearing isolated tracks can reveal how close we can really get with our current equipment.
Depending on the level of access, this may also show how how much 'bleed' they had to deal with back then. We live in very good times for recording.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
