Here's a challenge for the good programmers at PGMusic..

you've already created tools to generate harmonies, solos, melodies and chords...
how about a utility to generate memorable bass lines in MIDI?

The bane of modern music is the bass playing the root note ALWAYS! So many of the old classics are instantly recognizable because of the signature bass line. I'm not asking for a pattern-based bass line like what's already possible in the MIDI styles... I'm talking about an algorithm that would examine the chords and build a unique bass pattern that repeats throughout the song (more like a melody, but for bass)

One of the things I have to do in every project is replace the semi-random bass line with a groove that I play. An algorithm that generated a consistent groove pattern that repeats throughout the song would be cool.. and handy.

+1.

What a neat idea. Question, can the melodist output be transposed down an octave? If so perhaps the melodist output can be used as a starting point until Pat's idea is implemented. Who knows, while the output most likely would not match what you envisioned, you might like what the melodist created better.

I am a long way from my BIAB computer at the moment but I remember a harmony, number 37 called Jaco and the initial instrument is a fretless bass so this sort of exists already.

Yes it can,all midi tracks can be transposed + or - 2 octaves, in the channel settings in preferences.

In the days when I was midi only I used to use the melody, and soloist wizards in this way to achieve some interesting, and some extremely over the top, bass runs. Then I'd edit by mixing and matching the BIAB produced bass line with the transposed Melody, or Soloist, track.

hey, good ideas regarding using the melody generator to accomplish the same thing!

I had presumed that the melody generator would come up with something that was too "busy" for a bass line... but maybe not. And since it's MIDI, I can edit it anyway.. so that would work with a little effort on my part

But it would still be cool to have a tool that was specifically geared toward BASS lines

One application that comes to mind immediately:

1) use the melody generator to create a melody you like

2) copy its output to be edited for bass

3) lower the pitch for bass accordingly

4) delete extraneous notes and increase duration of remaining notes to fill the space

5) then drag the pitch so the bass complements the melody rather than duplicates it

end result: an original melody and complementing signature bass line all created in just a few minutes!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
