My Dell XPS i7 bought in 11/2009 serving as my dedicated music desktop machine for all these years is dying. Well it is not edead yet, but something is seriously wrong and its end is very near. I am working now at getting everything I need off of it, but with 5 years of music making, it will not be easy to get it all. By the way, at this time I feel it is some failure of the mobo. Machine just freezes after ~ 10 minutes and all power to USB devices disappears (mouse and keyboard lights turn off).

My first problem is the large PCI card I have for recording. Hard to find a stock box which has the full size PCI (or is it). Any one buy a new DAW recently??

Hey Dan...

I went through the same thing... I had a PCI interface that I loved - a Gina20 - loved it...

But when it was time to upgrade, I decided it had to go... time to move on to a USB interface. You can't fight progress. Move on. I ended up with a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6. The Presonus interfaces seem nice, too..

Bite the bullet. Be a man. Admit that it's 2014. smile

Shed a tear or two.... but embrace that shining new corvette... you'll be happy about it in the long run...

Currently in denial. Maybe a new power supply, maybe a new boot drive.

I have three drives in the machine. It boots from an SSD which I now don't trust. It just will not stay running long enough to do the diagnostics I need to do. Even in safe mode it freezes after a few minutes.

But maybe you have a point FJ. There may be some wisdom in what you say. I just need some time alone with it for now. To be with it and help it through these last moments. We were together for such a long time.

The SSD would not cause power problems like you describe.

For $20 you can buy a power supply tester. The power supply would especially be suspect if you have added any internal devices to the stock machine, since Dell, HP etc. save money by providing the minimum required power supply.

And yes, it is still possible to build a computer around a motherboard that has a legacy PCI slot.

It a miracle.

I changed the boot drive from the SSD over to one of the other internal drives. It has now been breathing on its own for almost an hour allowing me to backup the two internal HDs to a eSATA external drive. This suggests the SSD is damaged or corrupted which was causing the freeze.

If it can make it through the night I think we may be on the road to full recovery.

Before trashing the box, try that.

If it is indeed your PC dying and you need a PCI slot or two for the new one, check out:

http://www.ibuypower.com/

Don't let the "gaming" moniker throw you. Customize what you want. If you make the right choices from the customization menu, it'll easily be one of the best PC's you'll buy.

Everything from the case to the power supply can be selected from the menu. Even soundproofing the case for studio work.

3 year warranty, 72 hour run in time and probably the best packing and shipping you've seen.

If you do decide to buy new stuff, then if you replace the mobo and central processor to an i7 life will be a breeze, assuming 64 bit. I do this every few years, and I am no techy. Most of the peripherals can be reused, from case and mouse to hard drives - usually. . If you get another SSD, I recommend Samsung 840's.

Modern set ups can handle almost everything musical thrown at them.

Well I wouldn't consider a 2009 computer that old, mine is 2010.

Another invaluable program after cloning or disk imaging prorams is EasyBCD, which will write the whole master boot sequence to another drive, so that your computer has no bootup problems. It will not delete any files on your esisting disks.

The fact that it can copy the MBR (maybe a different name in windows 8) to another drive so as to use as a backup to boot from is great.

I have even got all the boot startup info copied to my PGmusic supplied hard drives, so in case of emergency (if internal drive boot files becomes corrupted) I can boot up windows 7 from them.

It was a long night, but this morning it was still on and working! Praise the Lord.

Now how do I move the registry from the damaged SSD Boot drive to the new boot drive. The new boot drive is not actually new, it was the machines original boot drive, so it had all the startup files. I have kept it as a internal drive for storage. So it has a lot of files on it including the original registry.

But now BIAB (as well as many others I assume) are having trouble. BIAB says it is not registered and will not run!

I need to find a way to take the registry only off the damaged SSD drive and replace it to the new boot drive in order to resync it all. Or I have to reinstall much of my software. I will be checking google later today.

If you can't access the drive to unregister BIAB, you can call PG Music and explain the situation and reference this thread. In any event, there are, what, three registrations allowed? It's more than one, at least, so you can keep working.

I'm intrigued by your question about moving/copying the Registry. I never thought that was possible, and I always re-install software. I'll be watching this thread in case you discover a solution.

Matt, Acronis and probably other back up programs can copy the registry. If he has such a program he could copy the C:/ drive then load it onto his internal drive and change the internal drive to C:/. Again if he has a back up program I would clone his entire system to an external drive then swap this drive with his internal one.

I suggest this as he doesn't really know if his SSD boot drive has damaged his registry. Thus if he clones it to his internal drive he may just be copying problems.

Another thought just occurred to me. If he searches for and runs regedit he can export the registry to his internal drive, BUT using regedit on his internal drive first to export it, that way if the SSD registry is damaged he can import the working registry.

I hope this helps.

PS - I have a folder call Reg Backups that I keep all copies of my registry in just in case of a problem. Just prior to using CCleaner's registry cleaner I make a registry backup.

Thanks. Yes, I know about imaging the whole drive, and I regularly makes a copy of my Registry before any major installation or system change. I didn't think you could import that saved copy into another drive and expect it to work correctly. And, as you say, you might just be propagating errors.

Matt, I was thinking more about this and I think he can move a registry from one drive to another IF and this is a big IF he has the identical programs in the identical places on both drives. Off course this assumes the same MO, peripherals etc. Without everything being identical then yes I believe you are right.

What I don't know is if he does copy the registry will a registry cleaner clean up the transferred registry. I have never run across this situation so I have no real experience in it.

This is why I use Acronis to back up my entire systems onto external HDs. Acronis has save me a couple of times.

The drive and its registry on the SSD drive was cloned from the drive and registry on the original drive (which is now the boot C drive) ~ 4 years ago. So it is the exact same machine. The only difference is time and all the changes between the programs which were installed since the SSD was made the boot drive and its registry was effective.

I have Acronis and have made backups with it. Just don't know where they may be. Let me run it and see what it has for me.

The trick seems that I have to reboot from the bad SSD drive again so I can export out the registry. Then I can return the boot to the original drive and import the registry.

Registry Export
1. Click the "Run" button in the Start menu. Type "regedit" (without quotes) and press "Enter."
2. Right-click the "My Computer" registry key in the upper left hand corner of the left-most pane in the registry editor. Select "Export."
3. Set the preferred file type to ".reg" and the "Export Range" to "All."
4. Set a location for your registry backup to a folder on your flash drive. Click the "Save" button to begin the export process.

Registry Import
5. If you're simply moving the registry file to a new drive for storage or backup, drag the .reg file off of your flash drive to copy it into the appropriate folder for storage.
6. If you're importing the registry to a new installation of Windows, double-click the registry file and click "Ok" when asked about merging that file with your current registry. Note that this step cannot be undone.
7. Reboot your PC and test your settings to make sure that your registry settings transferred properly.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
