Can anyone tell me how to do a complete clean install of 2014? I'm on my 3rd version with the same problem - the only way it will run fairly well is if I use the DXi/VSTi synth. If I reroute to my Fastlane MIDI interface, PT stops working. Obviously something else I have is causing the problem but I have upgraded versions at least 6 times so something I have on my install is killing it.

There is a difference between 'rerouting' to a DXi/VSTi synth and sending MIDI to an external port (interface).

Can you explain further how you are selecting these options?

I have the box checked that says "Re-route MIDI playback to default Dxi-VSTi synth". I choose the Fastlane Port A for midi in and out - if I uncheck that Re-route midi box, I blow up when I try and play a file.

You cannot 'Re-route MIDI playback to default Dxi-VSTi synth' and expect an external MIDI source to work.

If you are using the external MIDI uncheck that box. It is there to force all MIDI to an Internal synth (DXi/VSTi).

Then it is a matter of setting the audio settings correctly to hear the sound from the external synth.

Audio is not MIDI and MIDI is not audio.

To use an external MIDI device, MIDI should get sent out to the external FastLane device, and in turn get sent to a hardware synth. Then that synth sends the audio back in thru an audio port for you to hear it. Since the Fastlane has no aility to create sound, it would need to be connected to another synth that would generate the sound, then that sound would get sent back to PT (as audio) to be recorded.

Otherwise, just use an internal synth and don't select the Fastlane.

I may not be explaining myself properly but I don't need help understanding what MIDI is - I've been composing songs with my keyboards and MIDI for over 20 years. I know you can't do both MIDI out and reroute to the built in synth. I only mentioned that because if I run MIDI out to my MIDI interface and obviously then to my Roland Integra-7, I blow up. If I redirect to the built in synth instead, it plays fine. I've had the same problem through 4 different versions of PT. I guess I finally have to give up and start using a different product.

Nah, this is solvable.
I had no idea your experience so I wanted to point out the simplest issue first. No offense intended.
Other ideas:
Have you tried disabling 'MIDI Thru' in PT (Options-Preferences-MIDI tab-MIDI Thru buttton)?
A MIDI loop could cause such an issue

Have you tried disconnecting the MIDI out of the keyboard so it doesn't send MIDI back to PT (depending on the Thru settings on the synth; some reroute Thru to Out if a setting is triggered).

After doing this, can you hear PT MIDI generated sound from the synth using headphones directly on the synth?

That's where I'd start.

I would assume that the Fastlane is a Midi Driver which should appear in the Midi Driver display as the first option in the Output Driver section and highlighted.

As a default all the Driver ports are set to Number 1 to correspond with the first driver in the display. Check Classic Windows > Column PT).

As advised uncheck the box "Re-route Midi to default DXi/VSTi".

When using an External Synth it is necessary to setup its Input Driver to Fastlane to mirror the setting in PTW. Again, I use a Roland Sound Module which recognizes the Midi Input without a specific setup operation.

I would also suggest unchecking the Input Driver entry for Fastlane which will stop Midi data being returned to PTW causing an echo effect.

Does PTW lockup when attempting to send Midi data to your keyboard synth????

Really appreciate you folks trying to help me out but I have tried your suggestions and it is no better. It will bomb randomly - one midi file can play fine but when I try to replay the same file, it blows up. I have had this same problem through 6 versions of PT - I keep hoping that a new version will solve the problem. At this point I don't know what to do. I was hoping there was some way to remove the program and all it's components before I reinstall from a fresh build. I have tried removing the program and installing again with no change so there is something That isn't getting deleted. All suggestions will be tried!

I would suggest that, as your MIDI files play Ok via a DXi/VXi plugin and you have had this problem through a number versions of PT, perhaps the problem lies with either your USB connection or Keyboard Synth.

Have you any other hardware or a software synth with a standalone version to check the operation??? Have you contacted the supplier of the USB interface for help???

This is very frustrating for you

After uninstalling the program, go to Control Panel - Programs and Features

Uninstall PGMusic DirectXFX.

This is the only thing I can think of that gets left behind .. along with whatever softsynths you may have installed along the way, but the softsynths are separate from PGMusic install.
However it may be worth trying to reinstall those also.

Make sure PT gets installed into its own folder in the root of the drive, not in the 'Programs' folder. It should be installed to C:\PT

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
