Hi everyone, having a bit of trouble with BiB's instruments... I'm new to BiB, but a long-time (20+ years) user of MIDI sequencers and the like, but this has me stumped. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be a huge help!

I manually set a "third party" VSTi as my Default Synth, and now all non-Real-Track synths (bass, guitar, drums, etc.) are all playing as the synth I set as the Default Synth, regardless of what I set for them in the VST/DX Synths/Plugins box.

And... what should be the Default Synth set-to by default, Coyote WT? Sample Tank? (The Coyote WT sounds pretty poor, though it does seem to have all the default patches that BiB requests accounted for... and Sample Tank as the Default Synth doesn't seem to produce any sound at all... smirk )

Oh... and is there a difference between "Realtime VST/Dxi Plugin Settings" and just "VST/Dxi synth Settings" control boxes?

Many thanks!
Amadhia

Hi Amadhia,

Welcome to the forums.

What you describe is unusual in that a VST/DXi synth added to an individual track usually over-rides the default synth. The order of adding might be important, though. I'll do some experimenting later today and see if I can shed some light on this.

My thought is that the best synth for the "Default" position is something like Coyote WT, Coyote Forte, TTS1 or some other general midi synth. A synth like Sampletank has to have the patches set for individual midi channels and requires setting up before using as the default.

After reading your post, it sounded to me like Realband might be a better place for you to work. It's much more versatile in relation to VST/DXi than BIAB.

Personally, I write my material in BIAB because it's generation of accompaniments is faster than RB. This allows me easily to test run a number of styles in the fastest way possible. I use a standard general midi synth in the default position for this. Once I have assembled my song and chosen a base style, I then take it Realband where I dress it up by adding more elaborate soft synths and additional Realtracks. When I have all the tracks sounding like I want, I then export my RB tracks as wav files and use a third party DAW for final mixing.

Hope these thoughts help,
Noel

As Noel said, RB may make things easier for you (Realband)
It offers most BiaB options and opens BiaB files, but it lays things out linearly like a sequencer (if you're a 20+ year sequencer user as mentioned in your post, you'll likely appreciate this).
Plus it is easier to assign different synths to different tracks, at least for me. I have the same 'long time sequencer use' experience and RB is simply so much more comfortable for me to work in.

As for a Default Synth, I usually start with Coyote FORTE (note this is different than Coyote WT, much different)

There is a free 30 day trial and is only $40 to own last I saw. Efficient and better sounding than the WT.

Hi Amadhia and welcome to one of the nicest forums on the Internet.

I have some questions. Do you already have a DAW? Is it 32 or 64 bit?

The reason I ask is because if you do have a DAW you can use the method that many others and I use. I use BiaB with the lousy sounding default synth then drop and drag everything over to my DAW, 64 bit Sonar X3e. I use this method, as I am very limited with 32 bit programs like BiaB and RB when I use my very good sounding VSTis. Many others go from BiaB, RB then to their DAWs.

If you don't have a favorite DAW then use RB. It is a very capable 32 bit DAW and the only one that works directly with BiaB files and it has a more refined regeneration program. You can regenerate only sections/measures of a track.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

64 bit Win 10 Pro, the latest BiaB/RB, Roland Octa-Capture audio interface, a ton of software/hardware

Hi Aamahdia, I too usually use mostly BIB to build my songs, then finish them in different DAWS, however, normally I use Coyote Forte as a default synth, better sounding that the WT one, Like Noel said, when you assign a different VST to a track, that track should sound like the assigned VST regardless of the default one. Now, sometimes depending on a particular VST you have to make sure that within that VST the assigned midi channel is the right one for that particular instrument, otherwise it might not sound at all.
Hope this helps.

Mike B.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
