My Stylepicker tells me I have 3368 styles but there are 6040 .sty files in the bb folder - why the difference?
I notice that some files in the bb folder are saved with and without the minus sign eg. -zzjazz.sty and zzjazz.sty. I understand the minus sign indicates midi styles with real drums but this doesn't seem to account for the nearly 3000 difference. Have I got styles that the Stylepicker is ignoring?
Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
The smaller value refers to the number of styles you have available with your version of BIAB.
The larger value refers to the number of styles listed in the Stylepicker. The reason for the difference is that styles are often listed in the Stylepicker under multiple categories.
For example, if you select "Country" styles in the category column. You can find the midi style BGWALTZ.STY.
This same style is also listed under "Waltzes" category.
Regards, Noel

Hi Noel
I don't quite understand your explanation.
The larger number is the actual number of xxx.sty files in my bb folder, not the number listed by Stylepicker. If Stylepicker is listing the same style more than once, as you explain, then shouldn't the larger number be in Stylepicker?
Tony

Hi Tony,
My mistake. I thought you were referring to the numbers for "All styles" and "Total style entries" within Stylepicker.
When I counted the styles in my \bb folder, there were 4,725. Is it possible that some MGU/SGU files might have been counted in your total? My Stylepicker lists 4,331 styles. I have the everything pack.
Regards, Noel

Interesting. After reading this, I looked at my total number of styles on the hard drive and it came to a total of 5,710. Keep in mind that this total also reflects all the ones that I have collected on the web beginning a long time ago. When I rebuilt the styles list, just to make sure it was current, the popup screen you get when it is finished shows the following: "Number of entries = 5722. This includes 881 extra styles that were found in the BB folder that are listed in the "Other styles found" category. When I add up the "All Styles (4,291) and the "Other Styles Found (881)" it adds up to 5,172. These two figures don't even come close to the "Number of Entries = 5722" figure it gave me after rebuilding the list and it is even further removed from the total number of styles I have on the physical HD of 5,710. BIAB must not be using the new Common Core math standards.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that the style file defined as C/D or E/F substyles show up in the style picker, since they are linked to the style with the A/B substyles. That might explain the discrepancy.

I didn't think to check the pop up window when you re-build the Style picker - it tells me it found 11,830 styles!! I have a lot of Norton and other downloaded files. When I list the xxx.sty files in the /bb folder I get 6030 files and 3368 in "All Styles" in Stylepicker.
Does BIAB have a limit on the number of styles that Stylepicker can accommodate?
Whatever the explanation, this is all very confusing. I have long felt that the way styles are listed in Stylepicker is long overdue for a major revamp.

Does BIAB have a limit on the number of styles that Stylepicker can accommodate? ...
Tony Yes. Some years ago, someone exceeded the limit (I think it was about 10,000 at the time) and Dr. Gannon raised the limit. You might not be able to search for this post as it has been several years. What the limit is now, I don't remember, but I think I recall others who have higher counts than yours. To be safe, though, call PG Music Support if no one else knows here.

May not be an issue here, but also remember that BIAB counts and aggregates styles found in both the c:\bb and the c:\bb\styles folders.

May not be an issue here, but also remember that BIAB counts and aggregates styles found in both the c:\bb and the c:\bb\styles folders. That's interesting because I don't have a c:\bb\styles folder as such but have 78 different folders c:\bb\styles00 to c:\bb\styles77 all containing mgu song files but no styles files. Tony

Tony, those folders are the style example files for the 77 MIDI styles disks offered be PGMusic. Plus the original ZZxxxxx.sty styles makes 78.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
