Recently on the user showcase, an excellent song was posted that included vocals provided by a song demo service. Adding professional vocals made a big difference to the song. I went to the WEB SITE to see what's up. Here's my take-away:

I think the people on the user showcase who are trying to sell CDs or sell songs to the film and TV industry would be more successful if they joined forces and created a business like the one previously mentioned.

Its no secret that people who offer products and services to musicians almost always make more money than the musicians who buy and use their products and services.

Part of what makes this forum different from other music forums is the fact that people here are actually finishing their projects, and the projects are excellent. Much of what you hear on the user showcase rivals music we've heard on the radio and on CDs for most of our lives. From a marketing standpoint there are too many music pros competing for a few spots on the radio, and too few music execs who are willing to take a chance on somebody new... so the resulting market for our musical output is little to none if our goal is to break into the mainstream music industry.

But the market for helping amateur musicians get better, and achieve their personal dream is wide open! There is a bottomless pit of dreamers with a song to develop! And there is enough cumulative talent on this forum that it would be very easy to start something similar to (or better than) that other site.

If anybody here is interested in such a business collaboration, shoot me a message. I'll compile a list of everyone who wants to participate, and look into the mechanics of setting something up. As far as how something like this would work, questions like that would best be resolved by consensus.

Anyway.. just a thought... put it in the back of your mind and let it simmer.

In the meantime, go check out the other site, and project yourself into the equation. Listen to their demo songs. Feel powerful.

That's a very interesting idea, Pat. I sent you a PM.

Doesn't Rharv do a mastering service, I have been on his site a few times.

I think he does... but this idea could potentially include musical services above and beyond mastering.

I remember growing up, there was a service for aspiring artists called "FAMOUS ARTISTS SCHOOL" .. people would pay a fee to submit their artwork, and pros would offer suggestions for improvement. There were also projects that were geared toward developing core drawing and design skills.

I envision such a business working in much the same way. All of you more experienced song-writer musicians-arrangers would mentor, correct, add parts to existing projects , mix, master etc. If the fee was low enough that the average aspiring song-writer could afford an annual membership... think how many people that could be! Almost any subscription fee times thousands of potential customers adds up pretty quickly.

Great idea Pat. Well known fact that during any gold rush the folks selling shovels and treasure maps get a lot richer than their customers!

That's true Charlie...
but my point was to contrast the potential of breaking into the commercial music scene (pretty much zero potential)
to the potential of finding musical wannabes who need advice (huge potential)

Rationally speaking, potential is what should drive a person's efforts. Oddly enough, people keep devoting huge blocks of their life chasing a payload that just isn't there... when there's something else that is quite possible, and the same amount of work would almost certainly yield SOMETHING.

Kinda like the potential of getting money by buying lottery tickets as opposed to working a full time job.

Hi Pat. No intention to squash your idea. Think its great and does have a lot of potential and hope it works out, just making a joke.

I think this is a great way to promote music and especially new material, when users might not have all of the 'right gear' up front to produce the best possible outcome.

Thanks for the link Pat

Very cool idea. And yeah, I have done some "freelance" work for profit here in my humble studio.... creating tracks for people for various purposes. Everything from single instrumental track like guitar to completely finished and polished backing song tracks.

Let me know if I can assist in any way. I'm almost always interested if there's music and money involved and it's coming my way.

I used to look at it like Herb, but lately I'm pretty fussy about what I want to invest time in.
I'd likely be interested in participating, though, for the fun of it. I'd be there for a good time, not a long time. smile

At the same time I feel since this is a PGmusic forum, and they are in the business of selling software and encouraging people to learn to make their own backing tracks that the two things have to be kept well separate.

Personally speaking if someone comes on the forum and wants to learn to make backing tracks I'd point them in the direction of biab rather than some demo service.

Unless of course they don't want to spend the money on band in a box as its quite a hefty initial outlay, and just want someone to demo their songs.

At the demo studio Pat referenced, their "The Works" demo includes ".... electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, live drums, additional instrumentation depending on what the song needs (fiddle, dobro, mandolin, etc...)(ALL of these instruments are included in BIAB) - cost? $550. That's for one demo. A real pro studio demo in Nashville will cost three times that amount.

The BIAB Everything Pack is $569. Unlimited demos. grin

I think that such a service, using BIAB/RB, could produce a product equal to that little studio in Georgia, for a lot less money.

Regards,

Bob

Being a musician and being able to effectively use biab don't always follow.
I have an acquaintance that has BB and can not get even the basics of bb in his head, though he writes and plays some nice songs.
For him BB is a point too far right now, but he likes the backing tracks I've mad for him in BB.
There is a need for some of the things we can provide that are far beyond the teckno abilities of a beginning and intermediate song writes/performers.
The alternative is for someone to buy a commercial backing track of known, produced work.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
