That's the whole topic. 2-bar ending defaults to On, and I always forget to fix it, so I get ti the gig and my perfect arrangement has an extra ending (usually 4-bars, as I try to use RealTracks.) So I have to go back and redo, and my regen tracks may not be as appropriate.

Can I default this setting to off? Thanks.

Hi David,

Have you tried right-clicking on the chord sheet, deactivating the "generate 2-bar ending" option and then saving the song?

Regards,
Noel

Yes. I have to do that every song. What I want is to have that checkbox default to off rather than on for all new songs, so I don't have to remember every tome.

David,

I just tried turning off the two bar ending under "Song Settings" and then saving the song. I closed down BIAB, started it again, opened the song, and the 2-bar ending was still off. I then opened a song that had the 2-bar ending active and it was indeed active.

At first glance, it likes like this setting saves with each song. Are your tracks frozen perchance?

Also, do you have the latest build for BIAB? We're up to build #386 now. You can check what build you have by going to "Help | About Band-in-a-box" and the build number will be in brackets beside the version. For example: version 2014 (386).

Regards,
Noel

I think we went over this once before and Noel is right.

Just to be clear, I believe the 4-bar ending that became available a few years ago is a 2-bar ending with 2 additional bars of fade out. This is made possible by the Holds on all RealTracks.

That is correct. There is not four-bar ending, per se, other than the last two bars giving time for the track to fade out. BIAB only allows for 2-bar endings in a style definition. What was happening before this feature was implemented was that the song (with RealTracks) just ended abruptly. The additional two bars allowed for a much smoother ending.

It's analogous to when you have BIAB render a MIDI file to audio. If you choose not to select additional bars at the end, you'll find the MIDI cuts off too soon. The additional bars allow the final MIDI notes to fade out nicely.

Thanks, guys. My issue is simply to alter the default selection in a new song. If I change it, it maintains throughout that song's life cycle, but a new song always stars with the ending turned IN, and I want it to default to OFF (unchecked) so I don't have to deal with it every new song - I will virtually always unfold a tune to gain more control.

What I am looking for, given the origins of the program, is the equivalent of a CONFIG.SYS file for BIAB. If there is no way to do this, oh well. But if there IS a way, I'd like it.

Since this function is currently song-based, any change would have to be thought out carefully so as not to alter the library of songs already prepared by users. This would make a good Wishlist item, and I think we should request a global setting (choice) that can be overridden by an individual song setting.

+1 It seems like it shouldn't be hard to do, adding another check-box to "Song Setting - Overrides". Since I always write in my own endings I don't need the two or four bar endings checked. Another way to go would be, if you check tag ending on, the other endings would check off. Later, Ray

Matt, I would appreciate your doing that, I agree it should be a fairly simple task. And would save me a lot of frustration - of course, so would just remembering to begin a new piece by turning this off. blush

Thanks.

Would turning off the Prefs/Arrange option 'Allow any endings' do you any good? Per the help file it is supposed to turn off endings regardless of the status of the generate endings option in Song Settings. Might be worth a look.

Barry, thanks for the idea. Sounded good, but I just tried and exited the prog. When I reload, it still defaults to checked.

Nice try, though. smile

One more thing to remember.... yep.... I hate it when I have to remember something small every single time.... On my DAW I have what I refer to as my "ritual" for setting up a new project...... minimize the windows on both sides of the main screen, link the master faders, activate "D" for switching views, and there was something else.......I'll think of it later.....

So, another option that I have used a time or two is to make the song (as far as BB sees it) 8 to 12 bars longer than it needs to be.

Install your ending of choice and waaa laaa..... of course this works best when you are in a recording situation and can use the DAW of choice to edit the extra silence at the end out of the mix.....

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
