I have been using Real Band for mixing, but want to export dry tracks to a separate DAW for final production.

My Real Band setup is that I use a combination of Real Tracks, internal VSTi's (e.g. Konkakt), and external MIDI devices (e.g. Ivory, Ketron SD2) in Real Band. The computer sound-card output (Real Band) and the other outputs from the separate MIDI devices all come into my mixer on 3 separate channels.

What is the proper way to bring all of this data into a DAW and keep the tracks synchronized. In other words, what is the correct workflow to bring a Real Band Sequence with multiple track types in to another DAW for post processing?

Thanks

Trevor

I would convert each midi track to a comparable mono or stereo audio track while in RealBand by recording each VSTi and external sound module output to its own audio track. I would set those audio tracks to center pan, default (90) gain level and no effects then export all audio tracks.

This way you are starting your DAW project as an all audio project as all the midi production has been completed. RealBand also gives you secure storage for your midi work, midi derived audio and, should you choose to record your audio tracks using RealBand, all the rest of your audio tracks.

Thanks Jim
What's the technique to synchronize audio recorded from external MIDI. Is that just done by feel? Sliding tracks? I wondered about using SMPTE timecode somehow.

When I do Drag 'n Drop from BIAB into SONAR, all the tracks - MIDI or audio - line up at the beginning. No adjustment needed, although depending on which is brought in first, you may need to set the MIDI tempo in the DAW.

When I import MIDI from elsewhere, yes, it's partly by feel (read: hearing) but I also expand the file horizontally and look for hits to line up vertically.

Actually, within SONAR, MIDI tracks from elsewhere with SMPTE code embedded can cause you a moment of confusion when the timecode tells the file to begin several minutes (or hours!!) into the file. You see the 'empty' track and go "Huh?" before you realize the music is hiding minutes (or hours!!) away. More fun than you should be allowed to have, the first time it happens. Sort of a DAW IQ test.

Once I have a song that I think I might be taking to it's finished form, I will create a new folder for it. All of the BB and RB files go in it as well as the tracks.

So, at this point, I have created the tracks in RB. I simply click to select the entire track in RB, which highlights it and then I select EXPORT TRACK and send it to that folder. It's a "one at a time" procedure and takes all of 5 seconds per track.

I open my DAW, in my case, SONAR.... I check to be sure the time line is set to ZERO time at the very beginning of the time line.... and then select a track, click on IMPORT AUDIO and click a track.... I repeat this for each track I bring in from RB, picking them from the storage folder. I will save the Sonar project in that folder as well.

All told, the export from RB to the folder and import into X1 takes a few minutes...... 2 or 3 at most. Doing it manually ensures that I get the exact tracks I want, because I do render more tracks than I use. I pick and choose carefully which ones are used....and often will go back to that folder and delete the unneeded tracks. No need to waste disk space because, while it's not much in the big picture, it adds up with time.

That way, everything connected with the song remains in one easy to find place. I can simply copy or cut/ paste the folder to the backup drive for duplicated storage.

Thanks Herb for the detailed steps. Appreciated!
Sounds like a plan.

I like Herb's plan as well. I have done drag and drop, but when i take a little longer i get results that i can reproduce later. I will add that the smart money is on also copying that said folder to a external hard drive, and then redundantly burning to as DVD disk. That way if any equipment failure happens you can start over. I actually lost three early recording that i did not save properly. I wish i could re mix and update them now.

The other point to note is if you have any tempo changes (or time signature changes) you also have to set these up in the DAW. I quite often make a few tempo changes in BIAB and there is a useful song setting text file that lists all these changes and which bar numbers are affected. Of course you also have to allow for the 2-bar count in so that your bar 1 in BIAB will be bar 3 in the DAW. I make a list of all the changes and then set these up in the DAW so that when I move the BIAB tracks into the DAW everything lines up correctly.

Much easier without tempo changes though. I just like to make life difficult for myself!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
