This is the stalker song. It was written about a character in a science fiction book called Lucifer's Hammer, who uses a telescope to enter the life of a woman who lives 1/4 mile away. Overdubs include guitar, synth and organ.

The song was written in 1979, and practically wrote itself. In the book it says "Now he could watch over her shoulder, and it was as if Fred and his girl were watching TV together", and I wrote "I'm right behind your shoulder as you watch the evening news". I should credit the authors (Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle)as co-writers. From the beginning I imagined it as a Talking Heads type song, similar to Psycho Killer.

Your lyrics -

I'm getting bolder, I start to smolder,
I don't have much to lose
Secret admirer , I'm on fire, watching you every single day
Secret admirer, I !m on fire, one day soon I'll find a way

One day soon to find a way to do what? This line begs to be resolved since later in the lyrics you say you may make front page news.

It was an interesting song and write. A bit of an unusual subject but not as much today as it would be just a few short years ago.

Enjoyed the listen.

Charlie

Poor fellow will likely have his dreams dashed. It doesn't appear that he has come to an understanding with himself that his 'love' is a one sided affair and this lady will probably not be enamored by a stalker, nor show much respect. She will be reluctant to meet in a quiet place unexpectedly.

More likely, her big brother will smash his face and that will be the most respect he gets...

I'm not being argumentative about your song - just sharing my reaction to an the unusual subject matter. I actually think it is pretty cool that you would tackle the issue.

In the book it's revealed he's a two-time sex offender, nothing at all admirable about this guy. But as I read the chapter, the phrase "secret admirer" came to mind and became a song. I couldn't help it, I'm sure you all know what it's like when a song insists on writing itself.

Interesting song. As you said this is a song that just begged to be made. Larry Nivens has always ben great at creating imagery and you' transposed his images into song well.

Eric Burton and the Animals did an album called "Winds Of Change". The album had one song describing the time of the black plague that swept through Europe during the middle ages. That was a dark song about a distasteful subject but the song has stayed with me through all these years. The point is everyone may not like this song but I bet it will be remembered for longer than they think.

As RichMac says "Creepy" but really well done!! I hear a lot of the Cars sound in this. Your vocals are getting stronger. Everything works musically and lyrically. A strong write and great delivery!! Take care. Greg

Thanks Greg. Just to point out "Every Breath You Take" is a stalker song.

Hi Will,

I agree with Greg that your production is getting stronger. Good job on that! I also realize this was written long ago and you were actually writing about a stalker character from a book.

Since you brought it up I want to point out that Sting's song does something this one does not.

In Every Breath You Take the bridge answers the question I am watching you because....

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace.
I dream at night, I can only see your face.
I look around but it's you I can't replace.
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace.
I keep crying baby, baby please...

He tells us he's still stuck on his ex and filled with such angst over the breakup he doesn't know what to do without her. This creates some empathy because many people who had gone through a breakup could identify and relate to those feelings. By doing this he also cast an empathetic light on the rest of the lyrics as a whole.

It's going to be too hard for most people to relate and feel any empathy for a guy stalking someone he's never met, who's wanting to be there when that someone least expects it and who's goal is to get on the front page - which infers he wants to do that person physical harm.

Hope this was helpful.

Hi Will.

Yes, it's a bit of a sinister lyric, but the song does work well.

I liked the 80s sounding synths and the way the backing romped along, but I could have used a bit more bass in the mix.

An interesting write.

ROG.

As RichMac pointed out, it's suitably creepy, matching the subject.

Sounds to me like you hit the target you were aiming for.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Will,
With each song you're getting better indeed.
Your vocals improve to, and your backings are spot on.
Your song is very well produced, sound you really have a signature style.
The lyrics... You show how the logic of the twisted mind works.

Liked it a lot!

Fred

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
