I tend to listen to CDs for the songwriting. But sometimes it is for the productions (but they still have to be well written).
These are what I have been listening to for the last year (or so). Others may find some value in them.
If you have specific CDs that have captured your attention, add them to the list.
I'm always looking for "the next thing" to add to my iPod...
Let's have a running list...

Brandy Clark - 12 Stories
This is one of the best written Country CDs I've ever heard. Actually, no need for the "Country" qualifier...
Anyone interested in songwriting ought to own this and listen with every fiber of your soul...
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdDs7tHcsAGLFvMxvGv3jt74n9-JFDPkc

Kacey Musgraves - Same Trailer Different Park
Almost as good as Brandy... nice simple, open productions..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du_NnTzjs2o

Jason Isbell - Southeastern
Soulful writing. Simple productions for the most part - and all these songs need...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdwnGG29Upw&list=PLCw7uifZvD5vtxDgpFsXPeIiAyWjtY0PX

Lee Brice - Hard2Love (had to list each of these because they did not group together)
Well-written commercial Country with exceptional (modern) production...
Hard To Love
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtFwuPnzidE
A Woman Like You (if you don't like this song, there's something wrong with you....)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQYORsIfFE0
That's When You Know It's Over
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN1jZaZbBhw
Don't Believe Everything You Think
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cr4oYF7QAE
I Drive Your Truck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCSMCgqlc-0
See About A Girl
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf2YAKYnWjE
Life Off My Years
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtM7vs9gdZg
Seven Days a Thousand Times
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC3Z8FHK-5c
Beer (this is actually a GOOD Country song about Beer....)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDlTEJ_thJg
That Way Again By Lee Brice

I am a fan of Kacey and Jason so I will have to check out Brandy and Lee. For me I am totally (and I mean totally) stuck on a Darrell Scott kick:

River Take me
The Day Before Thanksgiving
A Crooked Road

Now at bandcamp: Crows Say Vee-Eh @ bandcamp or soundcloud: Kevin @ soundcloud

Thanks for starting this topic Floyd. One of my favorite threads is one where my BIAB friends - who all have great musical taste and ears for music, share their favorite artists and productions.

I'm still listening to hits of the 70s, and I think during that time the 'studio' wizards were at their heights producing cuts for the top charts. For example, I just heard a few Carpenters songs the other day, and was amazed at the clarity of the mix.

On another note - one of my favorite artists of all times - John Denver, seems to not have such great productions on his studio albums. The one great gem in his collection is a double-studio live album where I think they did the recording well - "An Evening with John Denver".

Love, love, love this writer....

Especially #3, #5, #8, #10... is so clever, #12.... the rest are excellent... but these are the stars in the group.

Kevin - thanks for the reminder - a buddy of mine is a big Darrell Scott fan - I need to give those a listen...

Joe - interesting... part of the reason that I want to do this thread is to introduce all of us to new "listens"... we, as a group, tend to date ourselves at times - and stay in the past where it's "safe". I don't see a lot of mention of current music (favorable mention, that is) and there is good stuff if we are willing to dig a little. It might also help some update their own sound a bit... BIAB is there to help when we are ready to embrace the "now"... smile

Nick Drake: Five Leaves Left (found it at the local Goodwill for $1.99 -Score!)
Beck: Morning Phase (slow and lovely and won a Grammy)
Josh Garrels: Love and War and the Sea In Between (to hear what kind of magic can be captured in a home studio with a real 'album' of songs woven together) http://joshgarrels.bandcamp.com/album/love-war-the-sea-in-between
Loodma recordings Soundcloud page (very well-done IDM - Intelligent Dance Music) https://soundcloud.com/loodmarecordings

Zander Zon: Sonorous (plays virtuoso solo bass guitar strung with a very strange mix of strings - my favorite album for helping to sleep on airplanes) http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/ZanderZon

Today, listening to Brandi Carlile...

Mostly from the CD "The Story"... it a good journey, so far... a mix of roots country, pop, alt-rock... nice, basic, small band productions... easily done in BIAB if you wanted to emulate these productions...

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
