Hello, Lawrence.

Thank you for this little gem.

Quite enjoyable in a poignant sort of way.

Thanks for the music,
Dan

There are an awful lot of things to like about this. Aside from the outstanding vocal performance and the excellent choice and editing of the real tracks, the part I like best is the mix of conversational lyrics with strong poetic imagery. Just flat out beautiful. What a great listening experience. Bravo Lawrence, Tom

"I turn the key and head on down the road/ and wave goodbye to Harlequin my crow
sometimes I think there ain't a thing in this world he don't know/ a philosopher that flies both high and low
I travel by the stars at night, I sleep during the day/ where ever my heart takes me is where I stop to stay
I study on just how my path got turned around this way/ I think I'm gonna vanish today
and oh come a rain/ a cold wind blowing my way"

Poetry...period.

Poetry and one of the strongest vocals I've ever heard here
here is a potent mix. A vocal that "milks it dry" but never
goes overboard, i.e., talent AND taste.

When wrapped up with an effective RT selection and mix
you've gotten a production to be extremely proud of!

And, for us, another fine song to add to the SC playlist!

Nice arrangement. I like how you brought the accordion in at the end in such a subtle way. Good build throughout.

"and oh come a rain/ a cold wind blowing my way"
- love your vocal on that...

Enjoyed.

Thank you floyd. This is one of those songs that I don't know where the lyrics came from. Except that as I wrote it I tried to give it a narrative progression, a movement forward from the preceding verse.

Musically after I pick out a few chords and a vibe but before I wrote the lyrics I knew that I wanted to put a long held note somewhere in the melody.

Bob, thank you and that's a good question that I don't really have an answer for. I will say that those memories are forever ingrained in my poetic morass.

Josie, thank you for the kind words.

I'm still not sure whether to take the lyrics at face value, or to treat them as one long metaphor, but either way it's an impressive piece of writing.

Thank you Rog. I think it is of the metaphor variety. I was looking for more haunting than sad so lights out seems appropriate.

Thank you. I swerved into the idea of introducing Harlequin the crow and the lines about him. I don't know where it came from but my suspicion is that it was inspired by Townes some how.

Listened again (and it was a pleasure). I liked the vocal processing better. And, let me say again...What a vocal performance...you nailed it! Take care. Greg

Well thank you for the input. It was a situation of addition by subtraction of some of the effects that I had added.

Lawrence,

This is one of the best written melancholy songs I've ever heard on this forum. Prosody doesn't get any better.

For me, the mix has too much going on in the center which is fighting the vocal impact. It also sounds eq'd just a little bright for the dark mood of the song - but hey mixes are so subjective....

Great song and vocal.

Well done!

Josie

Josie, thank you. That is very kind of you.

I'm glad that you commented on the instrument panning. I am experimenting on exactly that aspect of my mixing. I felt that I had fallen into a rut of doubling the guitar then panning them hard left and right and building a mix from that starting point. So I decided to try and brake the habit by doing something that to me is the opposite. A single guitar in the middle (with a slight 10% pan left). I sent everything to a bus where I side-chain compressed all the instruments to the vocal in an attempt to get the vocal to step out.

As for the eq it's interesting that it sounded high to you as I made an effort to emphasize the lows lol! That just go to show how different we all hear things.

Thank you again for commenting.

I like how the theme is consistent throughout. Really nice story telling. Having the photo of the crow in the bare tree and crows mentioned in the song ties everything together well.

I don't know if you have someone riding the fader while you record your vocal tracks but you get a lot of dynamics in your vocal track without clipping. Nice. You have a nice voice to listen to.

Thank you Jim. With this one I experimented with side-chain compression. I ran all the tracks to a Bus and compressed the bus to the vocal.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
