Using BIAB 2015. As I recall, there used to be a small "window" that showed what your were typing into a Bar. I don't see that now.
But that is secondary. My real question...
Is there any kind of "edit window" that I am missing (not turned on?) to make editing a Bar easier????...
Here is the situation... I am working on a song (original) that has some odd timings for when chords hit (a lot of syncopation)... so I am having to really experiment with chord placement and pushes to get what I'm looking for... several places where there are 4 chords in a Bar - some of which need to push... Each "experiment" takes a lot of "effort" to get what I am looking for (just to try it) and I keep fat-fingering things - and having to do it all again...
For example... I had a measure (Bar) that had
Db..d ^Ab..d
followed by a Bar that had the next chord (^Gb..d)
That timing was not right - the Gb was late... so I wanted to try
Db..d ^Ab..d,Gb
I took me several tries to get that in because I kept typing wrong stuff - because I can't SEE what I'm doing - until after it's done...
Follow that? Is there an EDIT WINDOW for a single (current) Bar that I don't have turned on???? It would sure help....
I don't know if you've experimented with the "Chord Settings" dialogue box. It's found in the menu obtained by right-clicking on the chord sheet (ALT+F5 = shortcut).
The areas I've highlighted with red boxes allows a person to play around with the settings on individual beats within a bar. This might help. (Through this dialogue box, it's also possible to set pushes, shots, holds for that bar and its individual beats.)
(The above diagram shows a C chord on beat 3 that has been pushed by 1/16th of a beat. On the BIAB chord sheet, this would show up as ^^C.)
Another thing that I do when first creating a song is to use a suitable midi-only style with just ordinary midi instruments via a soft synth such as VSC/DXi or Coyote WT (these are the styles with yellow writing for the tracks). While this setup lacks the professional sound, it's a stepping stone for me because these styles load in the snap of fingers and are very quick to test run the chord layout. Realtrack styles and Supermidi styles (with Sampletank) have significant generating times on my computer and I find that these slow down the chord drafting process.
Once I have the chords sitting right, I modify my style using Realtracks and Supermidi tracks.
Thanks, Noel... I'm aware of the chord settings dialog... I find it easier to type the necessary characters to accomplish the same thing (faster)...
I was hoping there was some kind of a "little edit window" that would allow me to work the half measure visually... since I'm dealing with a bunch of odd timings... for instance, I've gotten this far...
At bar 8, I've change the measure to 3 beats. The Bb at bar 9 doesn't play.... I've had this happen before...
The half measure at 7 1/2 was a problem... if I could double-click it and have a small edit window come up for that half measure come up... that would be heaven...

floyd,
I had a similar problem recently with "Walk With Me". I had a 2/4 bar where the chord that followed the 2/4 bar on beat 1 of the 4/4 bar did not play. I found that by putting a chord on beat 3 of the cell containing the 2/4 bar (this beat doesn't play with a 2-beat setting), the problem was solved.
With the above in mind, try putting a chord on beat 4 of the cell containing the 3/4 bar (bar 8). This chord won't play but it might do something in the generating process.
It is, John! Didn't it used to be somewhere on the left side? Now... if I could just double-click that and get a text-edit window... How cool would that be??!!??!!

floyd,
I'm pretty sure you already know this but, just in case...
In relation to audio output, it's possible to edit any Realtrack generation in Realband using the Audio Edit window. This might do the job for you rather than trying to notate chords.
If it was me, I'd also look at using my DAW and see if it's easier there. For example, in Reaper I can crossfade, snap to beats or fractions of a beat, and I can time stretch/shrink individual sections of a track. With these tools, it's very easy for me to slice a track, move the snippet to where I want it, adjust the time and to blend it with the audio on either side. Then, once I have one section working, I'd copy and paste it to any like sections in the song. (Given the super quality of your songs, I suspect you've been using a similar process for quite some time!)
You can edit the current chord by hitting Ctrl-F2. This is also available as a right click menu item, that also lists the hot key Ctrl -f2 in case you forget.

Perfect! That is exactly what I was looking for - Thank you...

Floyd, Yes Dbl clicking that should open that edit dialog, that would be a good feature to add. Thanks
A very good thread about off beat chords, thanks for posting
Though I find double clicking on a bar is great sometimes when I want to play the song from that point only, so maybe if it was Ctrl+double click, or something like that to edit the chord, as I'd hate to loose the double click play feature, I do know that pressing the space bar does the play from bar as well, but most times I find the double click a lot handier.

musiclover - The double-click is in reference to the window that John pointed out above, not the double-click at the bar - I, too, like that you can play from a designated bar by double-clicking...

Ah my mistake, seems a great idea then to be able to double click on chord edit box.

Yes, especially now that everyone knows where the chord edit box is...
And yes, the chord entry box used to be lower and to the left more, if I recall correctly. It,along with many other things, was relocated when the GUI was refreshed a year ago.
What I don't understand is the use of Ctrl+F2. That puts you into the edit mode on the cell. But to use Ctrl+F2, you are already there and can already edit the cell by typing. Am I missing something?
BIAB 2024 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 6.5 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6; Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Roland Integra-7, Presonus Studio 192, Presonus Faderport 8, Royer 121, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors
It's analagous to Excel, where the F2 puts you in edit mode. The difference between editing and just typing is that with editing you can just change a single character and not have to retype the whole thing.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
