I only recently tried the Transpose Songs feature under BIAB 2014's Practice Window. As I understand, this feature can randomly change the key of the song chorus by chours, which is great when practicing new licks over different keys. Or it would be great, if it worked. I had a set of licks that I have as one 48 bar chorus. I chose "transpose the song" and for "each chorus that a song is playing, transpose by" I checked "Random # semitones". This worked as expected for the first chorus, but when the song automatically repeated, the feature changed the key several times in quick order without playing anything, and finally settled on G (for some reason), but started the song somewhere in the middle of the chorus. I gave up as this just wasn't working.

Has anyone else used this feature? I have the automatic loop/replay checked so any song I play repeats. Maybe this is the problem?

Thank you for your assistance,

Bob

Bob:

I went back to my 2014 BIAB and tried this.
It seems to work fine although I'm not sure exactly how you want it to sound.

What I did was, open a "new" blank chord sheet, and put one chord in each of the first 4 bars (C, F, G7, C), then set the # of choruses to 1, the "end" bar to 4 and unchecked the "Generate 2 bar ending".

You may also want to take out the "count in" unless you need it to get ready to play in the next random key.

Then I set the Transpose Song to Random (the same as you did).
Now when I hit Play, it changes to a new key for every "chorus", i.e. everytime it plays 4 bars.

You might try that first and see if you can get it to work, then go back to your original original song and see what's different.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply Lloyd. I have count-in enabled; maybe that's causing my problems. You know, this isn't a big deal, as I can always manually change to the key. But, when confronted with a problem, it gnaws at me in search of a solution.

PS: All I want it to do is randomly change the key. That challenges my abilities a bit more than my choosing the next key. (I somehow avoid those with 4 or more flats. lol)

This is a known bug. The "each chorus that a song is playing, transpose by # semitones" feature doesn't work correctly with realtracks

Bob:

If your song contains RealTracks as Cerio mentioned, you may want to just substitute an all-MIDI style, since you're only using it for practice anyway.

Cerio and Lloyd S: Thanks. I was not aware of that bug. I'll convert all realtracks to midi. Cheers, Bob

I sent an email to PgMusic a couple of years ago reporting the problem, and they said they will look into it .

Maybe you could consider sending an email to them again.

That woukd be a very useful feature if working correctly.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
