I have an electric guitar, laptop (with BiaB and Amplitube) + headphones. I still have to buy a usb audio interface. My goal is to achieve a simple set up for silent practising using headphones. Now the part I am not getting  : Is it possible to run/play a track in BiaB itself and jam along with it trough e.g. Amplitube or do I first have to export a BiaB file to Realband (or other DAW) before I can jam along with it? Many thanks in advance.

Many thanks in advance. The answer is a resounding YES to using just BIAB to jam (along with standalone Amplitube plug in). Use RB when you want to record your Jams. The way it will work best is when you " ...buy a usb audio interface". Playing music from multiple sources in your PC is all about routing which is done by drivers which come with that audio device. You likely should be able to get it going with just your PC sound card and its drivers, but you will appreciate and enjoy the latency free playing and ease of routing from an ASIO driven device. I would recommend that if you want to do that...and yes, it will work.... that you NOT use Amplitude for the guitar. Get something like a Line 6 POD or similar hardware based amp modeler.
Reason being, is that the amp software sims can very often introduce an unpleasant delay due to their latency in processing the signal in real time. The hardware POD will not have that problem.
I never use the Sims for that reason. I prefer to get the sound I want up front in an amp or hardware based modeler of some sort.

Many many years ago I had a POD (for live and studio) and I like it. But it self destructed. It now is a nice decorative item on my bookcase. After that I used Amplitude (for studio) for years, it worked fine. So 3 months ago I bought the Line 6 FireHawk FX - a world of a difference indeed. If you got a spare 445 USD - I highly recommend (for studio).

Many thanks for your answers and tips! So I will purchase a usb audio interface first. Maybe there are devices wich include interface and hardware amp modelling together, I will look into that...
But I understand that the keyword here is latency/delay.
I have a Pentium i7 laptop with sufficient RAM. How likely is it that I will experience latency/delay when playing over the Amplitube "stand alone" version?
PS: although software like Bananas looks nice, I guess it will not overcome the latency problem...(?)

I also have an i7 with lots of RAM and Amplitube works just fine in both stand-alone mode and as a VSTi in my DAW IF you are using ASIO drivers. ASIO drivers should eliminate any latency that you would get with WDM/MME drivers. So when purchasing your audio input unit be sure that it has native ASIO drivers. Note there is an ASIO4ALL driver that is a wrapper for WDM/MME that some have had success with however others have not thus the suggestion of native drivers.
I have no experience with this as I do not use BiaB for recording but I believe others have experienced problems using ASIO drivers in BiaB. I use WDM/MME drivers in BiaB so I can have both BiaB and Sonar open at the same time. ASIO will only allow one unit whether it is hardware or software to be open, so if BiaB and your DAW both use ASIO you will experience problems.
Be sure to check with others about the BiaB and ASIO thing as it may or may not have been fixed. Also I believe that RD is capable of using ASIO drivers.

Amplitube/Guitar Rig work great, you can record live in Reaper, one track through Amplitube/Guitar Rig VST and you can record the other track DI. Thanks again everybody! I have narrowed my search for a usb audio interface between the Roland Duo Capture EX and the Focusrite 2i2 (or maybe the Solo). Must be good enough to jam along with BiaB. I probably still have to "play" with some settings (buffer size etc) to restrict latency/delay as much as possible.
The free version of Guitar Rig looks nice and I certainly have to try it out

You have just got to be able to mute the line in playback so you are not getting the clean guitar signal as well as the guitar FX coming out your speakers.

You have just got to be able to mute the line in playback so you are not getting the clean guitar signal as well as the guitar FX coming out your speakers. Do you mean the "Direct monitor" switch as on the front of the Focusrite? The Roland has also a "Direct monitor (mono/stereo/off) on the back of its device. I am not quite sure if I understand where you are referring to.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first?
