I downloaded a couple of plug ins and it appears I have picked up some possible malware? I believe it is called CPX Module, that is what shows up when I open the Task Manager and when I end it's task, my browser (Chrome) works normally.

I found a CPX folder in my programs (86) and deleted it. It does NOT show up in my control panel and AVG can't find it as virus/malware etc.

How do I get rid of it from my PC?

I am currently doing an anti virus scan with Housecall, which is one of the anti virus software that supposedly will locate it.

In case is does not find it, how can I remove it totally from my pc?

Thanks,

Trax

Go here, choose your OS, and follow instructions. It works.

The security tango does work. Prior to that you might want to try Ccleaner to get rid of all the temp stuff and anti-malwarebytes. Both are free. Run anti-malwarebytes in safe mode for the best results.

High jack this is also a good tool however you should be somewhat computer savvy to run it. If you know about the registry and how to back it up then try it but if not then don't as this is a very powerful but potentially dangerous tool in inexperienced hands.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Trax,

Also...

When you get your system working properly, make sure you create a restore point.

This restore point should be one where the registry is all sorted and no malware/viruses, etc., are present. Then, next time the machine behaves strangely, simply return to the restore point when everything was functioning properly. (Each time something new is installed on your machine, a new restore point will need creating.)

Just a thought.

Regards,
Noel

Yes, Noel's advice is very good. Personally I back up my drives to external drives via Acronis for the C:\ drive and copy for my data drives D-E-F. After the back up I unplug them and put them on a shelf. I feel that this is the safest way to return to a previous state. YMMV.

The CPX Module is for Google Chrome. It "redirects/steals" focus when opening a browser.

CC Cleaner, AVG, Anti Malware have NOT been able to get rid of it. I am running an adware cleaner now and if that doesn't repair it, I will have uninstall Chrome and re-install it (according to the websites I have found about CPX Module. It is a nasty buggah, lol.

I will update if and when I have conquered it.

I have also run the links mentioned above as well.

I *think* I have finally gotten rid of this thing. I had to use a Microsoft Security update specifically for malware.

I've NEVER had such a hard time getting rid of something like this on my pc. It is one of those bugs/virus that you know something is wrong with your pc but you can't figure out what? It doesn't immediately alert you that it is redirecting your browser, or trying to etc.

I hope the AVG and Microsoft update have finally cleaned it, we'll see.

CPX Module is what WAS showing up in Task Manager and it is nasty.

Next time you may want to try Malwarebytes Antimalware (or one of their tools) first.

Always attempt to update before running, even if you have to download the update/definition file from another computer (some Malwares specifically stop your system from updating online...)
They try to push the premium on this page, but the free is there at the bottom of the chart
https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

This page is also interesting, as it has some tools for certain situations .. like when the Malware won't let you install AntiMalware.
https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/#tools

I work in a computer company and the Service Techs there highly recommend it as first step.

Well I installed AVG free last week when building a windows 7 partition and then did a system scan with antimarwarebytes a very good free program to use. Just spotted Rharv mentioned it above.

It picked up the asktoolbar that is buncdled with avg as a PUP so wasn't too happy with that.

Changed my antivirus on that partition to avast.

Good chance if you are using avg and then though you selected not to install that asktoolbar it is still somehow on your system.

Malwarebytes should get rid of it.

Malwarebytes is my favorite spyware tool as well.

Another good one I've been using is HitmanPro. What's awesome about this one is you can download the whole program to a thumbdrive and plug it in to an infected computer when it cannot boot the OS properly. It's a bootable device. That one did the trick on my Dad-in-laws laptop a while back.

Thanks Rharv, I was still infected and d/l the Malware from above and it found a bunch of stuff, so hopefully it caught it. My pc appears to be working normally right now.

That CPX bug is NASTY. I don't know if it reinstalls itself or what, but I've thrown everything at it so far.

I appreciate all of the advice and help.

wink
If it returns, get the most recent update and run it in safe mode (reboot and hit F8 during reboot process until Safe mode opens).
Safe Mode allows Windows to run with minimal stuff installed/launched, thus can help sometimes because the malware never gets launched to 'protect itself'.

Glad it helped.

The Malware scanner catches it, but it keeps re-installing itself whenever I open up a browser.

How do I find which file is allowing it to reinstall from? I need to find the root file and so far, NOTHING has been able to catch it yet.

Thanks.

Man, this is a nasty bug.

Step 1 for me would be going to the run line and typing %temp% and deleting everything you can delete (some files will be in use and can't be deleted).

Then run REGEDIT and go to LOCAL MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENT VERSION > RUN and look for anything stupid, like a file named some random characters like sjhe7dtbxhb. Delete that.

Do the same thing for LOCAL MACHINE > USER > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENT VERSION > RUN

Those are programs that are loading at setup. Then delete the browser cache and cookies. Reboot n safe mode. NOW run your Spybot, or Malwarebytes, or CCleaner, or whatever tool you use. If that doesn't get it, you may have gotten an infection in the master boot record. That would be ugly and not a bunny slope problem. Black Diamond slope level problem. At the very least you need to backup your songs, docs, pics, etc preparing for a format and reload because a virus that deeply seeded requires that. I just used a bad virus problem as an excuse to buy a new computer..... LOL!!

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

Did you do in Safe Mode as suggested?
This can be important for the type that seems to reload itself. They protect themselves .. unless they never get loaded to do so.

Reboot and hit F8 key until allowed to run in Safe Mode.
Update the Malwarebytes before booting to safe mode so you can select 'Safe Mode-(no network or such)

I was unable to get into Safe Mode, so I did a complete recovery and had to reinstall everything. :-)

Took me about 4 hours total time.

I appreciate everyone's advice. That CPX Module was no joke ! Nastiest bug I have come across.

Thanks again,

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
