Hi all,

I've noticed many of the pop songs I like use tambourines (yes - they're old songs, I don't hear nearly as much tambourine in the modern stuff).

That said - I'd like to buy one. I've noticed some have skins while others don't. Can anyone that has auditioned a few different ones recommend a particular brand ? I'd really like to just order it from Amazon.

Regards,
Joe V.

You need to give us more info Joe so we can help you. Were you looking for a jazz tambourine? Or maybe a Country & Western model? Did you want an acoustic or electric tambo? If electric, do you have a preference for pickup type? Are you left-handed or right-handed? If weight is an issue you might choose a hollow-body instead of solid. So many questions! laugh

Wow John, - I didn't know there was so much to selecting the right tambourine !Just looking for one to use for pop songs like some of those listed above - Mamas and Pappas, Beatles, so many pop songs use them. Right handed - though I would have thought tambourines did not have a sidedness issue !

There are some specialized tamborines (such as one built specifically for drummers to sit on top of the high hat cymbals) but most are not specialized.

The number and quality of the jangles are mostly what you are paying for. The jangles can be made of brass, bell brass, tin or steel with each type having a different sound. Small diameter tamborine hoops have smaller jangles as well as less of them. A tamborine with skin can be hit softer, and create a softer sounding jangle, than one without a skin. Some of the skinless tamborines have a handhold in the side of the hoop.

I would go to the toy department of a large store or a local music store and pickup a toy tamborine for a few dollars. Sometimes you can find an assortment that will include or percussion instruments such as a triangle or shaker.

Also don't forget PG Music provides you with at least one tamborine music loop. Also I believe user solid rock has provided either tamborine music loop or UserTracks. There are also many free tamborine loops available on the web.

Favorite tamborine song: "Green Tamborine" by the Lemon Pipers.

If I were buying a tambourine, my decision-making flow chart would go something like this:

1) smack it against your leg. Does it jingle? (Y-N)

... if NO, then don't buy it. End of test.
... if YES, proceed to question #2

2) When you smacked it against your leg, were there sharp rusty projections that tore your jeans and/or punctured your skin? (Y-N)

... if YES, then don't buy it. End of test.
... if NO, then proceed to final question

3) When you smacked it against your leg, did other patrons in the music store seem annoyed? (Y-N)

... if YES, then don't buy it. End of test. Leave the store.
... if NO, it should be safe to buy this tambourine.

standard disclaimers apply. Passing the 3 step test above does not does not guarantee that other people who weren't present while testing won't be annoyed later. It also assumes that the tambourine won't be played enthusiastically in the middle of the night while family members sleep, or used to collect coins from pedestrians on the sidewalks of the world... or any other use which has been shown in previous studies to annoy people.

Buy one like this http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CP390

and one like this http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CP380

and you will have everything covered. If you have more to spend get the $40-$50 version of each.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Hi Joe! I was just kidding around!! smile It is so common on this forum for answers to begin with "You need to give us more info" that I thought I'd have a go at that with a simple device like a tambourine!!

I certainly meant no disrespect to you!!! More of a giggle at this forum!

Point about the overthinking things - I can't deny it - sometimes it leads to productivity, sometimes paralysis of analysis.

You really got me on the tambourine "more info" thing lol Caught me completely off guard. At least I can laugh at myself. Thank Jim F. for your respectable answer - making my question sound a little more so lol

My next question will be about selecting a cowbell. I've been inspired by the above video.

90 db, Looks like you must of took the tamborine with you. Not a single tamborine in that bunch! Seriously, Motown's house band, the Funk Brothers, had a percussionist that plyed tamborine, cowbell, bongos, etc. As with any instrument percussion adds a lot to a song.

Yeah, I was playing solo tambourine with that band, and I took it with me when I left. Their revenue really dropped without me "passing the tambourine". grin

I still wear the robes though.

If you use a DAW, you might consider using percussion loops. While I've already got a handful of tambourines and shakers, it's just simpler for me to drop in loops and then edit them a bit if required.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
