A while back, Guenter used some samples from NewYorkBrass on a song.
I had the same samples (they are a free download - link at bottom), but figured I'd never find a use for them.
Guenter knows what he is doing. I don't.
(We just all like having as many toys as possible - especially free ones).
David Cuny may have been who mentioned them in a thread about horns...

The BIAB horn sections are great for background stuff.
But the "rockin' stabs" are hard to get.
It would be a GREAT addition to BIAB if it could be done, but I would think it would be quite difficult.
I think there may be no choice but to create them "piece-by-piece". That is what I've done for this.
I may never do that again, but it was just what I needed to have this song work the way I've always wanted it to.
This is also the most complex BIAB file I have ever written. There are pushes all over the place.
We had some discussion in the BIAB forum about pushes - and could they be configurable - to allow movement forward or back for feel...
I did that in my DAW - just slightly - moving them to where the "feel" was right for me... sometimes slightly forward, sometimes slightly back, but a lot of them are where BIAB put them...
(there are several odd-beat measures, too...)

SHADOW OF A MAN

it's not likely
she'll ask you to stay for the night
she likes waking up alone
but it's still early
so turn out the light and hold the moment
when she'll be your own
when she'll be at home
in your heart... in your heart....

(chorus)
but she doesn't want to be somebody's lady
she doesn't want to be tied down
doesn't want to be somebody's lady
   she likes this night life
   she likes this town
likes the woman that she's found
   she's found herself
   found herself to be
   alive and free
   after being lost so long
in the shadow of a man

it takes that hearbreak
sometimes before you find you never needed
what you thought held your whole world
he held her down, ran around
made her believe she'd never make it
without her man
without his strong hand
to hold her heart... hold her heart...

repeat chorus

first names, bar games
laughter in the night that comes so easy
and leaves no promises at all
maybe i'll call
maybe, maybe i'll call

repeat chorus

Hey, Guenter... they are having a remix competition....

Harmonies by the janettes (That's Janice Merritt and me...)
Tom - thanks for the ear.

Loud is good. Loud in headphones will give you the real horns experience..

Have at it!

Good grief!!! I originally came on here to see if I could fix my broken BIAB - again. frown I think I'll throw it away instead!!! smile
How could anyone top this? I was not expecting such an Opus. Tremendous creation in the music itself, the lyrics and the amazing Brass. The feeling was almost of a Live performance.
You never cease to amaze me, Floyd.
cheers

Hi Floyd.

Bit of a change in direction for you, I think, but it certainly works for me. I can tell a lot of work went into this and I must say it was worth it.

Obviously, I love the brass, but you really have to respect that bass player, too!

Great song, great vocals, great production, arrangement and mix.

I, for one, would love to hear you do some more like this.

Hi Floyd,

you know exactly what you are doing!
And here you did a lot. After reading your
description I was surprised how it started. And
after going on listening I was even more surprised
how it developed. And that arrangement fit the lyrics!
A masterly production. Like Ian said a real opus.
Great use of the brass and the different basses.
I love the Janettes! And what awesome mix. I'm listening with my Stax headphones and it's a revelation.
I'm still listening without counting the listens.

Guenter

P.S. Thanks a lot for the hint to the remix contest. I'm going to give it a try.

Wow! Monster complex production. Extremely good . Sounds almost orchestral rock opera in places. Cheers.

WOW!!! Opus is certainly the word for this! Pretty mind-blowing arrangement. The music is really complex too. It reminds me of Todd Rundgren in the sense that just when you think you know where it's going, there's another turn. Lyrics are really cool-paint just the right picture. This is just over the top in so many ways. Awesome accomplishment Floyd!! You are a master! Take care. Greg

Floyd
A huge production - that does not typically sound like Band In A Box.
Excellent use of brass - great arrangement.
Vocal - both lead - and backing vocals which gave it a sort of big 60's feel (that 60's soul bass contributing to the feel)
Really interesting song structure and quite a showcase for what can be done.
Overall an excellent song.

HA! I've got many directions... That bass player was 3 different players... they did just what I asked them to do... isn't BIAB the GREATEST band???!!!! The program allows you to explore so many avenues.... it is the holy grail...

Wow Floyd and Janice!
Now this is definitely something else.
This could almost be part of a musical laugh .
The vocals: Floyd, we never heard you sing this high pitched before! Janice: very rhythmic and tight backing.
The music: These brass samples definitely dominate the song in a good way. RTs very well chosen.
Altogether a totally different kind of song, but very good!
About the free samples: in my case (serious RSI) not really usable, unless somebody creates a Kontakt shell, or Sampletank mapping. Anyone????

Quite a production Floyd! I am sure this didn't happen overnight. Those kind of horns are the ones that I wanted BIAB to provide but maybe like you said it would be too difficult. Very nice piece...from start to finish. I keep reading that this is different for you, but I personally like for people to branch out away from their comfort zone. Variety is the spice of life for me (well with the exception of most Rap). Enjoyed!

Wow FJ, You sound marvelous! Love that vocal. And the horns sound so real! Opus indeed - what a complex arrangement and production. Great job on the harmonies with Janice too. I felt like I was listening to the finale of a show in Vegas. Kudos for all the obvious work that went into this one. Color me amazed...

Hey Floyd,

Just home from 11 days in the hospital after prep and then surgery. Not feeling real good but thought listening to the great talent here on BIAB User's Forum might brighten my mood. Wow, did it ever!

Something totally different from you... at least from what I've previously heard. I can tell how much work when into this...more than a lot! Your attention to detail shines through.

You said you don't know what you're doing. I'd like to protest that statement! I would classify this as Symphonic Rock. I thought of Blood Sweat and Tears as I listened.

Everything about this is par excellence. Wonderful piece of music performed to perfection. Wow, still taking it all in!

Alan

Floyd, You're starting to scare us with your endless talent!

How good is that song? What an absolutely remarkable arrangement.

You provided a Full, rich, driving, top class delivery.

And Janice's contribution is superb. No surprise there either.

No doubt a big effort. This is Way up there.

floyd,

As sixchannel said
Quote:
Good grief!!!
that is astounding!
your voice, the tune, the brass, the janettes, the everything
The only thing that was normal was the mix. Altho' by normal I mean it was up to your usual extremely high standards.

I have tried using those brass samples but got absolutely nowhere but I did use some of the vocal asides!! and noises mad
I understand and fully appreciate, from listening to the song, how much effort went into the final product.

I can't even see the bar you have just re-set as it is so high now.

and you berated me for the number of RTs I used in Train Surfer. grin

excellent, absolutely excellent

Floyd, I hope you didn't nick your fingers too bad with all the cut and pasting you did on this one.

I love the level of complexity and sophistication you achieved here and I think this is your best out of pocket genre song since "Diamonds" which I also found to be complex and sophisticated in its production.

This song ends the debate of BIAB track's use to create a first class, unique and commercial production.

Enjoyed this from start to finish and looking forward to see you top yourself because I can tell you are enjoying pushing the BIAB limits as well as your own imagination. You are taking us on quite a journey and it's really a fun ride.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
