I just saw the story on CNN. I was not a fan of his music as such, but I thought a great deal of him as an artist. He was one of the most imaginative and thoughtful figures in rock music, and I will miss him.

I never took any of his albums to the cash register, but I admired his tenacity

Space Odyssey did deliver some groundbreaking material. R.I.P Mr Bowie.

Woke up this morning and heard the news.

I was working for RCA in 1972 when he released the Ziggy Stardust album. It started to ship so fast that we couldn't get them from the pressing plant fast enough. We knew then that it was going to be huge, but what we didn't know was that it was just the start of an amazing career which was to span more than four decades.

I loved most of what he did and admired him greatly. A unique talent who will be sadly missed.

I was quite shocked to see this on the news this morning.

I read that this morning in the Washington Post.

He was a talented performer/writer. I didn't like everything he did, liked some a lot, didn't others, but respected it all.

RIP David.

I loved David Bowie. His music was an integral part of my youth. I saw him when he played in Hong Kong. Without doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen. Interestingly, Bob Dylan played here and it was awful (I'm also a big Dylan fan). I followed Bowie for many years but sort of lost the plot around Tin Drum. Looking forward to hearing and seeing his swansong. Very sad, but a great life.

The first LP I ever bought was The Man who Sold the World. I also loved Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane, Low, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Pinups, Station to Station and Young Americans, but the list goes on. The weirdest song must be the single The Laughing Gnome. I bought that as well....

One of my school mates ran away from school to see him perform as Aladdin Sane or Ziggy Stardust, not sure which.... I did my teenybopper thing with him during Glam Rock in the UK. A lot of those artists are now sadly dead. frown

Check out these early clips of Bowie:

He never ceases to amaze me, just found this beautiful song. I don't remember it.

Was never really into his music, though as indicated on here others loved it.

A few journalists have said that the album is "his parting gift to the world" though I can't see it being given away free.

He could have put it online if that was his intention to do that.

At times like these a lot of journalists talk a load of c**P.

Yeah, very sad that Bowie has left us. Brilliant artist and performer and writer! And even more he was a cultural icon who helped usher in a whole new era in music and our culture at large. His legacy will of course live on in the minds and hearts of those of us who loved him and his art!

Thinking about this on my way home tonight, with Young Americans going through my head
"We live for just these twenty years
Do we have to die for the fifty more?"

/missed it by a few days
