Hey, all. I'm struggling to understand how BB deals with multiple endings and codas.

I'm playing guitar in a big band and I'm inputting the chords so I can practice. There's a repeat from bar 5 to bar 20, with the first ending from 16-20. The second ending starts at bar 21.

I've inputted all the chords into BB, but when I try to add the repeat, weirdness happens.

BB repeats the bars I've selected, but what is bar 21 on my piece of paper (the first bar of the second ending) is now labelled bar 33 on the screen. I understand that the program has to generate the repeated bars for itself, but this is totally messing me up. I won't even get into what happens when I try adding the DS Al Coda.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

The first thing to remember is that repeats are essentially a print function. Your song must perform correctly in a linear form before getting the fake sheet to work. Although you think that your second ending starts at 21, it's actually the second pass that starts at 21, and the ending starts at 33.

Now when you set up the repeats, the repeat starts at bar 5, the first ending starts at 16 and is 5 bars long (perhaps 17 and 4 bars?). Then select 1st / 2nd ending.

Look at the song in fakebook mode (button with 2 tied eighth notes), and it probably will be OK.

just lay out the song first (all 36 bars) and then add the repeats.

How do I tell BB where my coda goes? I've been using the menus but there seems to be no way to tell the program where my coda is. Shouldn't there be a way to insert a coda marker?

Song Settings.

There is a button for this above Start & End. Or, right click and you'll see it. Or, Ctrl+N.

Where? Do you mean the tag settings? I don't want to tag the song, I want the playback to jump from bar 16 (where my first coda marker is) to bar 41, where the second one is.

I did mean the tag settings. I haven't used the Coda in BIAB. You might consider Edit, Song Form, Unfold and make it one long song with whatever form you wish.

I tried using the tag settings but it says I can't because my song only has one chorus.

That's true.

What exactly do you want to do?

I'm playing guitar in a big band. We all have written out parts because we're all noobs, but I want to become great and I bought BB to help me. smile

Part of the problem might be my misunderstanding of musical terms here.

I have a piece of music that's 53 bars long called Lil Darlin. Forgetting all the other issues, this is what's supposed to happen:

Play from bars 1-40
Jump back to the sign at bar 5
Play to bar 16
Jump to the coda at bar 41
Play to the end of the song.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to set this up. BB keeps adding/deleting bars and I think it's because I don't fully understand what it means by "Start", "End", and "Chorus." Little help?

I'm not at BIAB now, but I think it would be this:

Start = 5
End = 40
Chorus = 2

and then have a Tag after 16 to go to 41 thru 5x

The last bar of the Tag depends on the ending you use.

In BIAB, the term 'chorus' means once thru the song. For example, if a song had a form of AABA, that is one chorus.

Don't drive yourself crazy... do it the easy way. Especially since you're all writing out your parts anyway.......

UNFOLD the Chorus into one chorus as BB calls it. That puts everything in a linear fashion. No need to jump around and follow the musical road signs. Start at M-1 and simply play straight through to the end. It's so much easier. It only takes a few minutes to do it this way. Then print the charts.

A little bit of copy and paste and you're ready to go.

as follows:

Play from bars 1-40

Copy bars 5 - 16 insert 12 measures and paste starting at M-41

Coda is now M-57 (if my math is right) play to the end.

Use "delete measures" to remove the unneeded measures in the song so it ends properly.

Yes, I agree with Herb and recommended that above. The method I showed will preserve a match of the measure numbers to your written chart. But having one long song with no repeats and no tags is always the easier way to do it.

Nice tune, by the way.

Hey, guys. Thanks _so much_ for your help. I've got it all plugged in with the proper repeats and tags. I had a fundamental misunderstanding about what the Start and End buttons did, and what a chorus was. I thought they just added bars (duh) and I was trying to use the DS Al Coda to send the song back to the beginning when I should have told BB I wanted another chorus. I think this is a bit confusing for someone who's classically trained and I think PG music could stand to clear this all up.

Bottom line: Woohoo! Thanks so much. smile

Good. Your comment about someone with classical training only is partially true. While BIAB has a very solid application of music theory, some folks over the years have felt it has a jazz bias in its origins. To a folk artist, chorus is quite different from verse/chorus that they expect. Overall, though, once you get the hang of it, you'll be fine.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
