Graham, I used Reason 3 with BIAB for years. I haven't done what you want, but I think I can help. Let me put a bit of thought into it and I'll get back to you. Are you aware that no version of Reason works with VSTi's?

Richard

Okay. Here are two approaches, depending on whether you play keyboard or another MIDI instrument or not.

If not: Bash together a version of your song in BIAB or RB and have it generate a General MIDI part or parts for you at the proper tempo. (It doesn't matter what instrument as long as the notes are what you want, because you're going to change it in Reason.) Save that track as a MIDI file, import into Reason, assign a synth or sampler, and let 'er rip. Save that track as an audio file (I believe you can do that it in R3; I'm onto 6.5 and the machine with 3 has died) and import into RB. You will have to sync it with your other RB audio, but if the tempo matches you should have no problem.

If you do play a MIDI instrument, save a MIDI file of your rhythm tracks from RB (so you'll have something to play along with) and import those into Reason. Then play your part, save as audio, import into Real Band, and Bob is your proverbial uncle.

PLEASE let me know whether this is clear and workable. There IS a way to do what you want, and I'd really like to help.

Richard

Here is something else to think about, Graham. If you have a registered copy of Reason 3 you can upgrade to version 8 for only €129. As a full-featured DAW you could create your RTs in Real Band, drag and drop them into Reason and do the rest of your audio and synth recording there.

You can download a demo with all functions except the ability to reopen saved files. (They will be there when you get your new license.) Take a look, friend. I know you'll be impressed.

At the moment Richard, I'm financially embarrased. Had to order a new rear window for the car yesterday, so with that and the new speakers I bought I'm so poor the mice have gone to live in the church. LOL LOL.

Upgrade's worth a thought in future though, thanks for the advice

I understand being broke, Graham; I just wanted to make you aware of the opportunity.

Aside from that, what do you think of the suggestions for making Reason and RB play together?

Or..... you could buy a downloadable fully functional version of Cakewalk's Music Creator 7 which is a fully capable DAW. It's $20 USD. Just the Cakewalk sound center synth is worth twice that alone.... and it comes bundled with MC7. It's what I call a "No Brainer Deal".

I used MC version 4 for many years and it totally supports VST's in the tracks like you need when you're working with any softsynth.

GH,

I (and I am certain Graham as well) hear what you are saying. This is not a matter of a mere GM synth, though. Propellerhead Reason is, in my opinion anyway, the most badass assemblage of soft synths, samplers, and effects available in a single package. Now in version 8, Reason 3 is still capable of stunning, dynamic, lush sounds. Modular in nature, it is only limited by your PC's memory. Plus, he already owns it, so no need to spend even a little on new software.

Yeah I LOVE 3 Richard, I've got some fantastic choir & vocal fonts along with really gorgeous strings. I might try and use it as a stand alone synth and record midi into real band. I havn't tried that yet, but will tomorrow. More than one way to skin a cat.

I didn't mention this because of the cakewalk sound center synth..... that's a freebee in the deal.

Graham mentioned in the OP that he wanted to be able to ....

Quote:
Anyone got an idea how I can use my favourite synth with real band ? Adding a vsti from the dropdown doesn't seem to work.

SO that's the point here. His synth doesn't work in Real Band apparently. If you have a really good synth and Real Band doesn't give you a good way to work with it in an intuitive manner.... you need to add a good DAW that will let you import the real band tracks and then you can easily add the VST of your choice and use it the way you need to use it.

A good DAW will let you do that. And..... for $20.... you can get the Cakewalk Music Creator 7 DAW, which will allow you to do exactly that. Forget the fact that you're also picking up a really nice sampling synth that's easily worth double the price of the DAW software by itself.

To get to the results he wants.... if Real Band doesn't let the synth work, simply add a DAW like MC7, import your audio and midi tracks from the other software and insert your VSTi and you're ready to go.

This is exactly the method I use to create the music I do. Export from RB into Sonar and finish the job there.

That's all I was saying.

http://blog.cakewalk.com/how-to-rewire-reason-in-sonar-x1/

Just googled this, don't know if it will work or not but probably worth a try, you can get other videos too by doing a google search.

I haven't used rewire a lot with reason in Cubase but here is what I did.

1 created a midi part in biab.
2 be sure to create a mixer in reason first before opening the midi file.
imported into reason 5 and give each track a synth voice, a lot are combinator patches as a lot of others don't work, and saved. Get it to play and save. Close Reason.
3 opened Cubase and set up the rewire got to be somewhere in sonar, just a matter of a few clicks.
4 Opened and Loaded the file again in reason 5 if reason is set up in the host such as Cubase and sonar should play, but at this stage the sound will only be to a stereo track at least in Cubase.
6 go to each synth instrument in reason that you are using (not the effects) and use Tab key to turn them around, and then right click on output and choose hardware interface 11, select a number. Save song in reason
7 activate more rewire outputs in your host Sonar and it should automatically create a track with the corresponding synth outputed from reason to it. Now you will have the same number of tracks in the host as you have in reason.
8 as far as I can see you can then mix all the stuff in your host sonar or Cubase if you like.
9 when exiting you have to exit reason first before the host.

Don't see why it shouldn't work it reason 3 as well as rewire has been around a long time

Good Luck

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
