I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 - well actually I have created a dual boot system so I still have Windows 7 with everything installed and Windows 10 as a clean install and I am gradually installing things on it. The plan is to migrate completely to Windows 10 once I am happy that I have everything I need working.

That brings me to Band-in-a-Box which is by far the largest re-install that I will have to do (100 Gigabytes or so). In December 2014 I purchased BIAB 2015 EverythingPAK and in December 2015 updated it with BIAB 2016 PlusPAK. I still have all the installation files but I recall the EverythingPAK install being a long process and also fraught with problems which were gradually fixed by patches and various other changes.

So, in order to

i). Minimise the re-install effort,
ii). Avoid duplication e.g. I already have full versions Sampletank 3 and Amplitube 4 installed on Windows 10 and
iii). Avoid installing things that I never use (a lot of the video tutorials and other filler that came with the EverythingPAK).

I am hoping to just install BIAB 2016 PlusPAK and copy any of the missing content from the 2015 EverythingPAK (RTs, MIDI styles and ??) from the existing \bb folder and all of its sub-folders to the Windows 10 partition. I would normally avoid such practice but I am sure that I have read here before that BIAB installs almost everything into the \bb folder to make it easy to produce the USB hard drive version. I know that the included versions of Sampletank and Amplitube go elsewhere but I am planning to persuade BIAB to use ST3 and AT4.

So, has anyone out there in BIAB-land already done this or something similar and can advise whether this will work or if there is anything else I need to take account of?

Many thanks,
Rec

I made the exact same purchases as you at about the same time. But, here the similarities end, to ease the pain of running out of HD space and also to run the program from an SSD but store the RD and RT files on a 2700 rpm HHD I chose to get a new computer with an SSD system drive and a 2TB storage drive.

I never reinstalled the videos from the Everything Pak to my new computer, I have accessed them as a test from the original USB drive successfully. I think someone at PG music support can answer your questions, if you catch them on a slow day.

The only other thing I can confirm is copying/moving the BB folder from one location to the other will make your installation quicker. Then chose option 1 when you install. Then change the location of the RD and RT in the preferences of BIAB, and RB

Thanks dga, the latter information should help. I will also contact support. I also have an SSD as my system drive and I am dual booting Win 7 and 10 quite happily at the moment from it although gradually I intend to move to Windows 10 once I have everything working. I can then shrink the Windows 7 partition and grow the Windos 10 one. Fortunately I keep most of my other data on large internal HDDs (circa 5.5 Tbs in total) and key data backed up externally.

Hi fiddler2007, not sure what you mean exactly. Yes I am dual booting Windows 7 and 10 64 bit. I do have a UEFI BIOS but I didn't change anything other than boot order to make it boot from the Windows 10 USB key.

I have had a reply from PG Tech support which I find a bit puzzling...

Quote:
The best way to ensure you have correctly installed to your new operating system is to completely install your 2015 Band-in-a-Box EverythingPak from your external hard drive and then to install your 2016 Band-in-a-Box PlusPak and 49Pak into the same bb folder.

You can not install the 2016 PlusPak upgrade without already having Band-in-a-Box 2015 installed, as this was a special upgrade path.

Also, you will want to install SampleTank 2.5 (32bit) which comes with your purchase of Band-in-a-Box. You can't use SampleTank 3 in Band-in-a-Box as it is a 64 bit plugin.

Ok, so I accept that a complete re-install is probably the "best" way but I was looking for a quicker way than having to sit through hours of unpacking RTs again (some of which gave errors when I first installed them so I can't even leave it unattended to get on with the re-install).

Also, the advice about Sampletank 3 is just plain wrong - that is why I purchased Jbridge at the same time as BIAB, so that I could use ST3 with BIAB and it has been working fine.

Anyway, there is nothing to lose in trying out what I am planning to try. I also saw a post from Noel96 about de-activating my existing copy and then re-activating it on Windows 10 which sounds like good advice.

I will repost here when I have moved BIAB to WIndows 10 with anything that I think other users might find useful.

The fastest way: Just copy the folders/files you want to the new destination and adjust drive designators where needed.

If you haven't done so already, move the videos to a separate folder that will not be copied.

If you want both installations to work, you might need to activate this installation. If not, deactivate the old installation and then activate the new one.

I think the SampleTank response deserves some context. Although I could be wrong, I think what they were getting at was that PGMusic uses SampleTank 2.x to play their Hi-Q MIDI styles (those styles automatically load SampleTank 2 for the tracks that use them). However, they will not load SampleTank 3 to play those tracks.

But yes, you can definitely install SampleTank 3 and use it as a VSTi; it just won't automatically be loaded for the Hi-Q tracks (for which you'll need SampleTank 2). As far as I know, both can be used on the same machine (although someone with ST3 should really answer that).

And yes, I you only purchased the PlusPak for 2016, then you must have an already installed BIAB 2015 to install the PlusPak. It will replace some of the files, but not all the files and therefore assumes those files are already there.

Excellent points John and this is a great example of how tricky working with computers and digital audio software is.

There's a joke in the CPA firm I work at that goes "In the best case, people remember 50% of what we tell them".

In this case it's you have to read what is there and listen to what they're telling you very carefully. Yes, ST 2.5 is completely different from ST3. And it's also correct that ST3 will not work with Biab. Why? It's because of a lot of technobabble about 32 bit vs 64 bit etc. Who knows about that? Well, you should if you're trying to work with this stuff.

The but, but, but is it can be made to work by installing a third party program. That's called a workaround and from the POV of tech support what they said is absolutely correct. Many times tech support for any company is not there to discuss workarounds. You can argue that support should have at least mentioned JBridge, but what else is new? The real point is JBridge is not part of Biab and is not owned by PGM therefore it's not part of what tech support does.

Yet again I'll say you have to be much more of a computer nerd to use this stuff than the average home PC user in spite of everybody's (not just PGM) advertising that says "It's so easy to use!".

Thanks GHinCH and jford.

GHinCH, I am pretty sure that copying most of the files across from my Windows 7 c:/bb to my Windows 10 c:/bb will catch a great deal of what I need i.e. the bits that don’t need “installing”.

In my downloaded EverythingPAK folder there are approximately 60 files of around 1 to 2Gb each and named along the lines of realtracksxxx-yyy.exe or realdrumsxx-yy.exe plus the odd shots/hold/direct input and style demos. That’s the part I hope to avoid having to re-install.

I see what you mean jford re Sampletank 2.5 and I agree that's probably what the support response meant. I have ST2.5 installed currently on Windows 7 to retain compatibility with Hi-Q instrument playback and plan to do likewise on Windows 10.

Bob,

I know where you are coming from regarding Tech Support not supporting workarounds. However, PG Music sold me Jbridge and are still selling it here --> http://www.pgmusic.com/jbridge.htm

It even lists SampleTank 3 as tested and working, a fact that I know myself having used it successfully for the past few months.

So for the support staff to respond that "You can't use SampleTank 3 in Band-in-a-Box as it is a 64 bit plugin" is just bad information.

I know that you need SampleTank2.x for Hi-Q instrument support but that's different to saying that you can't use ST3 because it's 64 bit.

If you have them installed already then the respctive files are somewhere in the RealTracks folder. Just copy this folder. (I have deleted all the installation.exe after I have copied them to an external drive for backup.)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
