Interesting. The article could have been three or four times as long and not run out of cover song material.

There is enough material to write a separate article just on Beatle covers. Early Beatle recordings included hits by Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Motown and even Herb Albert while many singers and groups have covered Beatle penned hits.

Thanks for sharing the link!

2 examples IMHO where the cover eclipses the originals hands down.

To me, the main point of the article is stated here:

"The process of dismantling and reassembling the ingredients of a covered tune can give you a glimpse into the mechanics of song construction and studio production, invaluable for anyone looking to expand their base of knowledge."

Similar to using a pro mix to check your mix.

Bob

Agree for sure. I was hoping there would be more detail after the comment but just the comment then let it drop. I'm thinking some of the article was edited out by an editor looking at the entertainment side instead of the educational side of the article.

I find that lots of stories are like that today. The headline promises but the content doesn't deliver. In fact, at times, what the headline references isn't even addressed in the story.

Agreed on content. The article could have been summed up "You Can Learn From Cover Songs" and had impact.

So, that being said, I think there is TONS that can be learned from cover songs.

The problem I see many times is, people don't listen to learn. They listen to do what they already know, but fail to hear the true details that they always miss in songs. Many times it's what is added. Many times it's what is purposely left out.

Nothing bothers me more than when you sit down with other musicians to listen to a song and someone starts playing along right away. They find their 3 chords and the "I've got it already" mentality takes over...they stop listening. I don't work with people like that anymore. They tend to do VERY mediocre work.

Thanks for the article. I think it's a GREAT gateway into a discussion on this. Well done smile

The “article” is rather sparse, perhaps a victim of the BlogSpeak so prevalent these days. It touches on listening for composition, i.e. songwriting/rewriting, but you should remember that this article was published by BMI.

BMI/ASCAP just LOVE covers. They make a lot more money on them, as do the songwriters/copyright owners. Just ask Sir Paul. grin

For me digging into covers shows just how good the writers, producers and players were. So called "simple" 2 or 3 chord tunes have so many little things in them that are just sweeeet.

One reason is the players are mostly world class pros. One session player with a huge resume explained it to me years ago. A producer has a basic simple pop tune and basically any decent player on whatever instrument could do it. But, he has a book of world class players on call. Why would he call only a pretty good player when he can get a virtuoso?

I listen all the time to basic chord rhythms either guitar or keyboard and they are effin perfect. Perfect timing, perfect feel, perfect touch and tone. Yet all it is is a simple basic rhythm. Anybody in their garage can do a decent version of it. But it's not perfect and that's the difference.

It's being referred to as "click bait". The idea is to get you to the page; not to provide you with any real content.

The blurb is from a BMI newsletter. It might be considered Click Bait if BMI had something to sell. They don't.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
